🌻 1 The Instagram Notification 🌻
Penthia Athy
An Instagram notification breaks the quiet in Los Angeles’s two-story library.
People in the room glare, searching for the source of the noise. They spot an Irish woman with dyed blonde hair and blue eyes, hurrying to a study table stacked with romance novels. She almost misses the table, quickly grabbing her Samsung SXX from a forest green duffle bag.
"Fuck! Sorry," she whispers, her voice full of guilt as she silences her phone.
Some people in the library give her dirty looks, while others nod and go back to what they were doing.
Embarrassed, the five-foot-one woman feels her face turn red as she checks a new notification from HungryTravelerMan1815.
After pressing the notification, PenFlower1812's profile opens, revealing a stunning image taken inside a coffee shop accompanied by the words, "Enjoying one of my favorite places in Los Angeles."
A smile spreads across her lips as she reads the story and debates whether to reach out to Rowan Bazinson, the person she has longed to talk to since she was sixteen.
Rowan, a thirty-year-old traveler, explores continents for a living. After dropping out of college, he dedicated himself to discovering cuisines, interviewing locals, and promoting new restaurants. Recently named one of the top ten sexiest men alive, Rowan doesn't attract Pen for his fame—it's his personality that captivates her.
Rowan's childlike spirit, smile, and warmth have stolen Pen’s heart—Pen is short for Penthia-Pen.
Today, he is rarely on the same continent as this wallflower. In Los Angeles, Pen longs to find the courage to reach out to him.
At sixteen, Pen dreamed of falling in love with someone like Rowan and living out the happy endings from her favorite rom-coms.
Unfortunately, Pen is now twenty-seven and recognized as an aspiring romance writer who spends her summers immersed in other authors' stories for inspiration for her next book, "I Can See You." Yet, still, single.
Pen doesn't remember when she first found Rowan's profile on Instagram. She only knows Rowan inspired her to write her upcoming story, "I Can See You."
The plotline mirrors her dream of reaching out to him and hopefully becoming friends.
The shy author doesn't expect their story to mirror her favorite trope: friends-to-lovers.
Still, Pen has always yearned for a guy who values friendship above all else.
She sighs and presses the heart on his story, accepting Rowan is unlikely to notice, then scrolls through her small list of followers: Penika_forever90, Lady_Ashita, DellyBelly06, and more.
After a few minutes on Instagram, she closes the app and gets ready to leave the library.
Pen picks three new books before stepping into the pitch-black library parking lot at six p.m.
One is a mystery romance novel, "Rebecca."
The second is a classic period piece, "Mansfield Park."
And her favorite is "Romancing Mr. Bridgerton," the fourth in Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series.

🌻 2 Pen(thia)'s Birthday 🌻
Penthia Athenia Alty feels very uncomfortable.
She stares at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, wearing the black dress her best friend since high school brought for her twenty-eight birthday party.
A black dress is considered classy event attire for a night out of town, but this one was different. It fit Pen's skin like a glove.
The first time Pen tried on this dress, she fell in love with its shape, how the two pieces of fabric hid the imperfections of her curvy body. However, this knee-length dress drew attention to the one asset that always draws a man's gaze: Penthia's ample bosom.
It was one of the things her mother Ebba Athy always liked to 'address' about her youngest daughter since she got her first bra at eleven. If Pen had a relationship with her mother, Ebba would probably tell her, "Show off the girls you have instead of always covering them. Perhaps then you can grab a man's attention and settle down." The sneer comments her mother made about her boobs always embarrassed young Pen because Ebba Athy made it sound like Pen should be dressing sexy to get a man to show interest in her, which made it seem like the only good thing her third daughter is good at is being a prostitute. Penthia shot that thought out of her mind as she contemplated wearing this dress tonight.
Although Penthia is blessed with the ability to wear size C bras, she isn't like other women who would flaunt them. Pen prefers comfort over beauty, but she had tried.
Throughout the years of trying online dating, Pen had several men come over to ask her out. But by the end of each of her horrible dates, they would admit to the conservative woman that they wanted to see her without clothes on. No matter how many hints they sent her to meet privately, Pen began to ignore their request to talk and had the two best friends make up an excuse for her to leave. After seeing and hearing their attention to her assets, Pen gave up dating altogether, and Erika became her plus-one at every party she attended.
And then there was the one time when a man scared Pen with his attempt to manhandle her in front of Erkia's brother at his twenty-eight birthday party at Nighttime club. That was a very terrifying experience.
Luckily for twenty-one-year-old Penthia, Cryus redirected the man by bringing the stranger into a head choke until security removed him from the premises. Still, Pen knew that showing more skin would give men the wrong impression that she was easy to access.
After looking at her reflection for a few more seconds, her hands start fidgeting with the top of her dress while her best friend from confirmation, Eashita Patel, finishes putting the final touches on her makeup.
"My goodness, Pen! Stop fiddling with your dress!" A twenty-six-year-old Hindi woman shouts in frustration.
From hearing Eashita's unexpected remark, Pen's shoulders tense up before seeing their eyes widen in shock.
The silence between the two women was difficult because Eashita had heard about Pen's older sisters' taunts. Although Pen was her best friend, Eashita never witnessed their interactions in the Athy household because Pen always hung out in places that weren't her home. According to Erika, Paulina, and Patience would always pick on Pen whenever she entered a room. They would yell out words like Pancake Penny or Piggy Penny. There were many times when Pen would call Eashita crying, asking to hang out, and Eashita always made time.
It was hard for Pen's friends to hear that her family had mistreated her while she lived in Texas. After years apart from her toxic family, Pen got better while visiting their church's priest for her daily checkup on her mental health.
Today is the first time in three years that Eashita witnessed Penthia having a trigger. The blue of Pen's eyes hazes over as she enters a state of her most traumatic memories. Within seconds, Eashita drops her mascara and steps back from the double sink counter before placing her right hand on Pen's right hand. She then cautiously smiles at Pen as she thinks of a way to bring Pen's mind back from her memories.
"Oh gosh! I am so sorry, Pen! I- I can't get this eyeliner on my left eye." Eashita confesses before looking at Pen with a 'forgive me please' pout on her face.
Pen emerges from her trauma haze and giggles at Eashita's statement, and the two ladies start laughing together amid the tense environment.
"Don't make me laugh-cry! It was hard enough to make my eyeliner perfect," Eashita whines.
"I cannot- help it, Ash!" Pen says between fits of giggles.
A few more laughs echo through the small bathroom walls while Eashita and Pen settle the situation before them —Pen's insecurities.
Giving each other confidence is what makes their friendship perfect.
Pen's body issues stem from living with her mother, and Eashita's failed attempts to rival her big sister, Lilavati, under her huge expectations.
"Ash, can you please help me convince Erika to let me change? I feel so f- uneasy," Pen pleads with her younger friend.
Eashita looks at Pen with a 'no, I can't' expression behind her brown eyes before replying, "Pen, you look phenomenal in this dress! Don't let your insecurities about being bullied get in the way of loving yourself. You got curves galore!"
Pen sighs in defeat while Eashita's dark brown palms cover Pen's broad shoulders.
Eashita stares over at their reflection in the mirror while Pen looks down at her thick fingers.
"Look at yourself in the mirror, Pen. Tell me what you see?" Eashita pleads.
Pen gives a, do I have to, expression while Eashita replies with a, yes stare. Pen then rolls her eyes as she compares herself with Ash's reflection.
Eashita is wearing a gorgeous red dress that gathers at the center to create a V-shape. A dress that both Erika and she helped her pick out last week. Behind Eashita's hourglass torso was her long, dark brown hair, curling around her tiny butt. Her brown eyes stare at Pen with a smile upon her brown-painted lips while the shiny pink eyeshadow on Edwina's eyes sparkles.
Eashita notices that Pen's gaze is on her reflection rather than on her. So she tries to get her best friend to look at her by placing her head on Pen's right shoulder.
This tender gesture works because the next thing Pen's eyes land on is the smoky blue-and-black eyeshadow on her eyelids.
The blue of her eyes pops from behind the fake eyelashes, and the white cat eyeliner brings the whole look together. Pen then looks at her plump lips to see them pop with the ruby-red color of the lipstick she picked up last week from Rae's beauty shop. The blush around her apple cheeks brings out the pink in her ivory skin, while her short hair curls around her oval-shaped face.
Pen knows this isn't why Eashita wanted her to look in the mirror. So Pen takes a deep breath in and out as she looks down at the lowest V-shaped dress she owns, revealing her plentiful bosom. She then takes in the rest of her body before looking right back up at her reflection to see a confident gaze on her face.
"I look drop-dead gorgeous," Pen whispers.
"Exactly, Pen!" Eashita exclaims before adding in a teasing tone, "Plus, I would kill to have your boobs."
"You and me both." They hear another woman speaking from the left side of the Jack-and-Jill bathroom.
Both ladies turn to see a twenty-seven-year-old woman with wavy dark brown hair in a half-ponytail, simple makeup, gorgeous brown eyes, a casual dress, and Louie Vaton's high heels beside them.
"Erika Elaine!" Pen shouts in shock, "How did you get into my apartment?"
The woman in question gives a cheeky smile to the ladies while teasing back, "Did you forget that I was your roommate before you got famous and could afford the rent by yourself, Pen? I still have my spare key! By the way, my promise of marriage still stands. Within a heartbeat. I can call the courthouse to make an appointment for our wedding."
Pen's face and neck blush deep red from the compliment while Erika gleams at her best friend.
"Thanks, but not interested," Pen says in one breath. "Plus, I only wrote one story! I didn't think it would sell out within a day!"
"Pen! Don't sell yourself short!" Eashita comments from her left side.
"Your writing is a work of art. And Auntie Steph can't wait to publish your next series."
"Again, I agree. But let us go! The night is young, and I need a stress reliever." Erkia yells out in frustration before grabbing Pen's and Eashita's arms.
They were about to exit when Eashita yelled, "Wait! Let us take a shot!"
Erika shouts, "Sure!" as she guides them toward the small table with several mixers that Eashita gifted Pen tonight.
Since Pen wasn't much of a drinker, Erika and Eashita served the birthday girl a Coke, rum, and a shot of tequila for themselves.
"Here to the best-selling author of Los Angeles! Happy Birthday, Penthia Athena Athy. May she have all of her dreams come true! Erika exclaims as she toasts with Ash and Pen.
"Here, Here!" Eashita adds on while they all take a shot together.
Pen is about to place her glass on the table when they receive an Instagram notification. She is about to open her black beaded purse from Burlington, but Erika stops her before she can open the small item in her hands.
"Pen, please tell me that is a guy texting you! And not that traveler guy you have been stalking since you were sixteen. You have been so focused on him since you saw a photo of him when you turned eighteen," Erika begs with pleading brown eyes.
Pen looks at her friend in a, what the heck, E!' glare while Eashita laughs at her reaction.
"I am not stalking him!" Pen shrieks, "I don't know anything about him!"
"Except what he places on his story, right?" Eashita carefully asks.
'Yes, and I still have a screenshot of that picture from when he posted a selfie of himself. But they don't need to know that Pen thought before exclaiming, "Yes!"
She then pauses to think of what she could say that would not make her creepy. And that is where it hits her. She doesn't know the man behind the Instagram account.
"Both of you know that I don't like knowing anything about someone's life because that is a breach of their privacy. Plus, it makes me uncomfortable when people bring up what they learn about their favorite celebrity online, unless it's about the inspiration behind their work. I don't want to know." Pen explains.
"Pen, you can stop rumbling. It is okay to have a crush on someone you don't know. But don't let it become stalking." Ash warns in a casual tone.
"Wow, it is getting awkward," Erika mumbles as she pours another drink and sips from one of the plastic red cups.
Pen brushes off Erika's comment while she clears her throat in annoyance. Neither looks at the other for a moment of silence until Eashita grabs their attention by saying, "Let us not forget why we are here. Come on, Pen! It is time to party!"
Pen smiles at Eashita from the change of topic as she sees her friend give her the right arm for Pen to hold.
"Yes, let us go!" Pen agrees before holding onto Eashita Patel's arm.
That's 80s Bar in Montclair, which is the only place Erika could get Pen to agree to go for her birthday, since she isn't a fan of bars. So that is where they arrive at ten o'clock.
There's plenty of parking, but since they switched to Uber, there hasn't been much of a hassle.
The three women walk confidently into the bar, where they see the crowded place and a live band playing "Every Breath You Take" by the Police.
Erika and Eashita begin the celebrations by getting drinks for the birthday girl while Pen goes through the motions: dancing with the two Es, getting drinks from the bar, and getting lost in the cranberries' music.
Several men approached her tonight to see if they could spend time with her, but she wasn't in the mood to dance with a stranger. That is, until she spotted what she thought was a man with curly brown hair, warm sand skin, and navy blue eyes wearing black Tom's shoes, Levi's, and a black shirt.
'There is no way he is here!" Pen thought from her side view while her buzzed eyes looked over at the man sitting in front of the L-shaped bar.
Pen's heart starts racing fast as her eyes confirm her suspicions.
'Yup, that is Rowan Chrystopher Bazinson. Pen thought as she kept her eyes on him.
Pen decides to close her eyes for a second to gather the courage from the alcohol inside her system to approach him. But when she opens her eyes...
He was gone.

🌻 3 The New Follower(s) 🌻
Pen wishes she got hangovers like Erika.
Unfortunately for her, Pen always wakes up with stomach aches.
It has been this way since her first time drinking Patron. She woke up today with the first set of stomach aches for the rest of the day, and all Pen could find herself doing was groaning from the pain. To distract herself from thinking about the aftermath of overdrinking, she looks down to see that she is still wearing the dress from last night.
A sigh of discomfort escapes her lips before she crawls from her living room floor and into her bathroom.
The toilet is the closest thing Pen sees, and she holds onto it as she heaves and finds herself waiting to throw up. But nothing comes out. So she tries to catch her breath for a few more minutes before getting up from her cramping position on the floor.
Once she can stabilize her aching body in front of the double-sink marble countertop, she sees that all her makeup from the night before has smeared all over her face. Another set of aches comes from her stomach, and this time, Pen takes the pain in stride as she removes her makeup with several makeup wipes.
Thank goodness she took out the item last night as she was getting ready.
Pen embraces the next set of stomach aches by leaning on the counter.
She takes this time to finish removing the last bit of makeup from her lips and wonders what she can do for the rest of the day when the light from her phone catches her attention.
Curious to know who was texting her at nine am, she picks up her phone, and her screen lights up with a picture of Erika and her from their first visit to Disneyland.
She blinked two times to get her eyes to focus before seeing several new Instagram notifications, and, boy, was Penthia in for a surprise.
The first notification reads, 'HungryTravelerMan1815 is now following PenFlower1812'.
Pen gawks at the black banner before pressing on the notification banner with her newly painted nails. Sure enough, she sees a red dot under the speech bubble, with a person's silhouette blinking. Pen presses the icon with shaky hands and sees several unique things on her white screen.
First, HungryTravelerMan1815 has liked every picture of her with Erika. Second, she had two new people following her?!?
'Why on earth would he like the pictures with Erika?' she thought before clicking on the second follower's name, Rowan1991Colin.
She follows Rowan1991Colin's private account, and her invitation is accepted within a few minutes.
After seeing his acceptance, all the puzzles inside Pen's brain come together to paint a picture. Pen sees underneath the bio information that not only HungryTravelerMan1815 is following Rowan1991Colin but also Erika's account name, Penika_forever90.
Pen gasps as she curiously looks into his tag section to find an old picture of the wealthiest family in Blossom, the Bazinsons. Seeing an old family photo with a tag that sent people directly to Erika's account cleared Pen's confusion.
"Rowan Bazinson is Erika's third brother!" Pen shouts in shock before asking herself aloud, "Why didn't Erika tell me that her brother is a traveling Instagrammer?"
If she recalls correctly, Rowan's name came up from Erika's family as 'Runaway' Rowan. It has been his nickname since Pen met Erika on the welcoming day for freshmen at Blossom's Catholic High School.
Erika's widowed mother, Lady Iris Bazionson, constantly reminds Pen to call her Lady Iris and is the first person she meets. This lovely lady with blue eyes, wavy chestnut-brown curly hair, and a gentle smile spoke with the insecure girl as the girl picked up their schedule for their first year at the all-girls school.
A few seconds after their small talk, the mother of six took Pen in as her own, and Pen treasured each moment of going to different places with the Bazinson clan.
Penthia's favorite summer memories are the smell of old books and the colorful spines of the endless rows of books at Lindsey Hall.
Penthia remembers the first time Lady Iris opened their country estate on the outskirts of Blossom as Lisndey Hall Library to the young redhead. Unlike her mother, Lady Iris always allowed her to spend the summers reading any book from the country and the Texas estates.
The widow never forbade the clever girl from absorbing knowledge, unless the reading wasn't appropriate for her eyes. Erika has six siblings.
All six had inherited the same warm-sand skin, oval eyes, and brown hair from their father's Greek side of the family.
Pen remembers Lady Iris talking to someone on the phone and stating,
"Rowan is the one who resembles my darling Asher the most.
When my sweet boy is around, I see Ash the most in Rowan, from his charismatic smile to his sensitivity.
It might explain why I have learned to accept his long periods away from home.
But Steph, I wish my boy found a reason to stay rather than him missing the moments with our family."
Pen remembers walking away from that conversation, wanting to know more about Rowan, but hasn't learned anything about him in decades. As for Lord Asher, Erika's father unexpectedly died when she was in elementary school. After his death, her eldest brother, Viscount Xander, took over the family finances at age nineteen.
During Xander's finals, Lady Iris reminded her eldest son not to worry about the estate until he graduates with his business doctorate that summer. Still, the eldest felt it was his duty to take care of their family rather than have their distressed pregnant mother.
Pen remembers seeing the now thirty-nine-year-old leaving home for nine times or spending his free time with his siblings, but the heir of the Bazinson estate and the preteen hardly ever talked to each other since their first meeting.
Cryus is the second oldest. He is a serious artist who aspires to have his artwork exhibited one day. He has the closest bond with Erika and always finds ways to make Pen laugh whenever his sister is busy. Pen never hangs out alone with Cyrus due to the age gap, but he includes her in their family plans.
Runaway Rowan was never around when she was visiting, so Pen skipped over to Erika's eldest sister, Adela Tracy.
Lady Iris told Pen that Adela was one year younger than Rowan but one year older than her best friend.
Oh goodness, Adela made Pen's teen years so memorable.
The rebel may have been the eldest daughter, but she was a wild child in high school.
Adela was rarely home due to her secret relationship with Xander's best friend, Oliver Shepardson. Although the pair were nine years apart in age, their relationship became a forbidden love story until Adela turned eighteen. Pen lets out a chuckle as she remembers the times she helped Adela Tracy sneak Oliver into her bedroom by distracting Xander by asking him about balancing the family's finances.
The Viscount was thrilled to talk about accounting. Those conversations with Xander helped Pen manage her future expenses as a writer.
Seven years ago, Pen found a way to thank him for his clear explanation of finance by introducing him to Eashita's eldest sister, Lilavati- Vati for short. Both couples are now thriving and are making families as we speak.
Erika told her that their weddings were private affairs. Therefore, Penthia couldn't go to them.
The fraternal twins were unexpected.
Gabriel was born on June 1 and reminds everyone of their birth date.
Pen doesn't understand why Gab keeps reminding Ella that her birthday is June 2. She can only guess that he is jealous of her being the baby in the family. Like Adela, Gabriella (Ella for short) is a firecracker who always tries to get Pen to play tricks on her other siblings. Meanwhile, Gabriel runs whenever she enters the same room as the eldest twin.
Pen didn't have her first conversation with Gabriel until he turned nineteen, and he admitted to having a crush on her before introducing Harriet to his family as his girlfriend, along with Valerie, her best friend.
Rowan Chrystopher is a different story altogether.
After a decade and a half as best friends with Erika, she had never met him. Whenever Pen would ask about Rowan, Erika would always brush off the questions about her brother by claiming that Runaway Row couldn't stay in one place since he turned eighteen.
Why would Pen's best friend prevent them from meeting?
Only Erika knows the answer, and our lovely writer Pen will find out this summer.
Pen's memories of the past fade into the background when she notices something different in her Instagram inbox.
HungryTravelerMan1815's name tops the list. That can only mean he sent her a message, or she sent him something while she was drunk.
"Shit! What the hell happened last night?" Pen asks in a frantic tone while recalling what happened.
During her birthday celebration, Erika had to cut the night short. She received an urgent message about one of her brothers coming over to crash at her place. They all decide to leave the bar together.
Pen made plans with Eashita to sleep over until she got a call from Vati.
Vati decided to leave Blossom, Texas, and surprise her baby sister with a visit. Meanwhile, Xander would join them later. Before the call, Pen took one last shot with Eashita before opening her Instagram account to find HungryTravelerMan1815's latest story.
It was a photo from the same place where she celebrated her birthday, which is the 80s bar.
Drunk Pen told Eashita about wanting to talk to him. She may also have mentioned seeing him last night, and Eashita said, with a slur between each word, that Pen should send him a message.
After all the spur-on words from a wasted Eashita, Pen did, and now she is about to find out what she wrote while she was drunk!
In three blue bubbles, Pen reads.
"I know you will probably block me from your account, but I finally got the courage to reach out after following your account for so long, and I wanted to know if we could be friends.
If so, my name is Penthia Athy. Today, I turned twenty-eight, and I have never been kissed, gone on a date, or masturbated, whenever I am reading romance stories.
OMG, I can't believe I just wrote that last part. Well, I guess it is a good thing you probably won't see this. But if you do, I am so sorry! I got to go, Bye!"
HungryTravelerMan1815 left the message on read.

🌻 4 Erika's First Confession 🌻
The mortification of seeing what she wrote to Rowan on his travel account was not all that Pen had felt since the Sunday afternoon after her birthday celebration.
Oh No!
She was beyond pissed at Erika Elaine Bazinson.
When she befriended this political feminist, Cyrus warned young Penthia about the lack of communication as Erika introduced her new friend to the extended family on Christmas Eve. Except for Rowan, he was back in Mykonos, Greece.
"Please. Pen. Don't take this to heart. Erika controls the information she gives others. It has been this way since her first shared birthday party with Rowan." And how right the artist was.
A good example is when the famous blogger Emerald Jane's identity was Penthia at a high school party.
For years after hearing Erika defend Pen at every interaction, Shawn Weber cornered Erika and retaliated against her loyalty to standing up to him, stating in a fact tone, "Why are you defending Piggy Penny when she is Jane Emerald?"
At first, Erika didn't believe the truth from one of the two male bullies until she used Pen's laptop to research how women used gossip as a form of power in the 1800s. Seventeen-year-old Erika went ballistic on Pen from the revelation that her wallflower friend is the vile gossiper Emerald Jane, and their previous mega-fight almost ruined their friendship! Since that day, Penelope has allowed certain things to slide when Erika distances herself.
As her journalist professor once said, "Some things are better left unknown."
Her brother Rowan is a taboo topic for Erika. There was never a chance that her best friend wouldn't roll her eyes whenever someone in the family brought him up. Pen knows that Erika manipulated the situation in her favor. And that is something Pen hates the most about their friendship.
Erika Bazinson is selfish.
Whenever Erika feels threatened by someone or the person wedges themselves into their friendship, she finds a way to remove them from their circle of friends. It happened when Erika first met Eashita. Pen warned the shy romantic reader. Eashita allowed Erika to boss her around for a decade until she got fed up and became Pen's voice of reason. This cycle began when Erika broke up with her first and last boyfriend, Theo Smith, because he wanted her to spend less time with Pen, and continued when Erika met her ex-girlfriend, Kira Brookes.
A couple of years later, Erika confesses her feelings for Pen after Kira dumped her, but the redhead gently lets her no-filter friend down by declaring, "I am flattered by you coming to me with your feelings. However, I am only interested in biological males."
To make matters worse, Erika still tries to let Pen know that her feelings have not changed by teasing her about Pen's lack of confidence in asking a guy out. That was until last year, when Erika accepted that their friendship would stay platonic by saying "yes" to a one-night stand at Xander's engagement party.
Tonight, Pethia is waiting to meet Erika at their favorite Starbucks, which is conveniently located near the office, after work. To converse with Erika about this serious topic, Pen buys her friend's favorite Earl Grey tea and water for herself. Once Pen receives the order, she brings herself to the nearest table beside the wall, sits down, and leans her hands on the small round table.
It doesn't take long for Erika's top bun and the two pieces of hair surrounding her peach-colored square face to appear at the entrance of the quiet coffee house.
A smile rests upon her lips as Erika walks swiftly into the seat across from Penthia.
"Pen, I am so sorry for leaving earlier on your birthday. Runaway Row decided to visit me in Los Angeles." Erika exclaims in disbelief.
'Thank goodness she brought up Rowan.' Pen thought while licking her lips nervously.
"Speaking of your brother, were you ever going to tell me that he is HungryTraverlerMen1815?" Pen asks in a casual tone.
Erika's smile falls flat as she leans back into her seat.
"How did you find out?" Erika asks while the index finger of her left hand traces the lid of her Starbucks drink.
Pen looks at El with a disbelief glare while her best friend stays silent.
Erika takes her silence as an answer and proceeds with the conversation, asking, "Do you remember how you acted when you first stumbled on his blogging post?"
Pen looks down bashfully at the question.
Erika answers the question, "You were infatuated with him. You were always waiting for him to post more of his travels rather than spending time with me, your best friend! You didn't think that I had noticed when we were in high school. But I did, which is why I could never introduce you to Rowan. Pen, you hold a light for him to interact with you, so that your sisters made fun of you whenever they saw you on his account."
Pen stays silent while Erika continues with her confession,
"It hurt to know that Rowan already had your heart without knowing you while I was trying to separate myself from my family. The only way I could prevent you from the heartbreak of seeing his girlfriends around the house was either to make plans to go out or to introduce you to my male friends.
Pen sighs, "Eri, I could not stomach the idea of dating the guys you or our family introduced to me because I always felt like they wanted more than what I was willing to give in to the relationship," she confesses before looking back at Erika with guilt.
Erika's other hand reaches out for Pen's right hand while she gives an, I know' look behind her sad brown eyes.
Pen allows Erika to hold her hand as her best friend confesses, " Pen, we know I can come off as selfish. But I wanted you to see other males than to see you pin over someone you have never met."
Pen nods to accept Erika's explanation before teasing her, "Is that why you are always annoyed whenever I get notifications from his account?"
Erika laughs at her question before finding the best way to answer Pen's remark.
"Pen, you had my nerdy brother on a pedestal! Someone had to bring you back to reality." She states back in amusement.
A genuine smile forms on Pen's face as she realizes that Erika is right.
If she were to meet Rowan at a young age, her friendship with El would have fallen on the sidelines. Plus, pinning over her best friend's brother is such a cliche trope.
"So when will I be meeting Runaway Row?" Pen asks with a glimmer of delight on her lips.
Erika gives her a don't you dare start pinning for him again look before warning her,
"There is something you should know about my brother. No one knows how long he will be staying in one place. It is one of the reasons why my mother waits until he visits nearby and tells everyone where to meet for our annual family reunion."
An ah-ha light bulb appears inside Pen's mind before beaming at Erika as she states in a matter-of-fact tone."Well, that explains why Vatixander is visiting?"
Erika gives Pen a 'What are you talking about?' gesture.
Pen takes her curiosity to explain her remark, "Ash had to leave a few minutes after you left on my birthday because Vati surprised her with a late-night call."
An ah expression appears on Eri's face before asking, "You think my whole family is coming to Los Angeles because Runaway Rowan's here for a project?"
Pen nods 'Yes' to confirm her theory, and Erika lets out a mixture of annoyance and displeased groan.
A chuckle escapes Pen's lips while she looks at her best friend's anguish with amusement.
"By your expression, Erika, I assume you are not excited for your mother to have the family reunion here." Pen tauts.
Erika replies with dread, " You and I both know I followed you here to Los Angeles after you emancipated from your tasteless-tactless mama."
Pen looks confused by the unexpected comment about her awful family.
So, Erika decides to give a bone, "My mother wasn't thrilled with me wanting to move far away from Texas until she realized that you were moving alone to California. If she were to come here and fall in love with the Los Angeles limelight, then I would never escape her matchmaking clutches."
A chuckle escapes her lips until Erika gives her a don't you laugh glare.
Both ladies look at each other. Seeing her best friend try to hold in her laughter, Erika then begins to laugh.
In the end, both laugh at the silliness of the conversation until a student studying on the right shushes them.
Once they have control of their laughter, Pen gives Erika a pitiful gaze, and she comments in a sly tone, "Well, let us hope she doesn't uproot from Texas," before taking a sip of her water.

🌻 5 The Family Promise 🌻
Rowan Bazinson
True by Spandau Ballet enters Rowan's ears as he sees her for the first time in years, his navy blue eyes meeting hers. The only word Rowan could use to describe Penthia Athenia Athy is the Greek Goddess Venus.
Gah, Rowan misses her red curls.
Still, Penthia's blue eyes alternate like the Mediterranean ocean.
Alternating between shapes of cornflower blue whenever her mood changes.
Rowan Chrystopher learned of Penthia's existence when Erika celebrated her 18th birthday party in August with their extended family, even though her birthday landed on Thanksgiving that year.
If there is one thing Rowan clearly remembers about teenage Penthia, it is her red hair being more orange-tinted in her fiery red curls than her two older sisters' and her vile mother. Yet the young man found her mesmerized as he hid behind one of the many bushes in the forest backyard of Lindsey's Hall that afternoon.
Sweet sixteen-year-old Penthia was twirling through the field of dandelions in a handmade historical dress in lemon yellow, letting the sun freckle her porcelain-like skin. With her ivory fingers, Penthia picks up one of the flower seeds from the many stems and closes her blue eyes.
Curious as the nineteen-year-old Rowan was, he smiled with amusement as Penthia made a wish and blew all the seeds away.
The young man almost got caught staring. Trying to get a better view of her, when a twig from a nearby tree catches teen Penthia's attention.
Luck must have been on Rowan’s side, for Penthia had brushed off the noise as a small animal in the nearby trees. Regardless of the relief young Rowan had, he had accidentally run into a bush of poison ivy while avoiding an old oak tree, which was hiding his previous actions.
Xander and Cyrus had laughed after finding Rowan coming back in from his supposed walk as he entered the back door with red blotches all over his recently tanned skin. Rowan still remembers the tingling and scratching in certain parts he never knew could be infected by poison. Still, seeing the wishful petite redhead in the open field of their summer cottage at the outskirts of Blossom, Texas, has changed his life.
For months, Rowan couldn’t seem to think of anything but Penthia Athy.
It was a fact that his baby sister, Gabrella, known as Ella, would tease him whenever he tried to bribe her with information. He would constantly bring her bribery presents whenever he was back in the U.S.
According to Ella, she has been Erika's best friend since the beginning of high school, but Erika warned everyone in the family that he wasn't allowed to meet Penthia.
He remembers nine-year-old Ella warning Rowan, "Ro, you can't tell anyone what I tell you. Erika wants you to know nothing about her. Can you promise me that?"
Rowan wasn't sure why Erika wanted to keep Penthia away from him, but their family worked as a whole unit to make life comfortable for all, so Rowan obliged his sister's request.
"I promise. Cross my heart and die." Rowan promised his little sister and kept it all these years.
It was strange for teenage Rowan, who couldn't understand the reasons for Erika's actions until the following year.
When Erika asked everyone to gather at our mother's dining room table, Rowan remembers it was a cold November morning. His second youngest sister had an important announcement to make after celebrating her birthday at their family estate in Texas.
All ten family members were sitting on the longest family heirloom, with their mother at the right end of the table.
Lady (now Dowager) Iris always had them eat breakfast at her home before having the family attend Sunday Mass. Therefore, everyone attended Eika's meeting.
Rowan can still picture young Erika fidgeting before him. His sister couldn't stay still due to her nerves until Adela had had enough and shouted, "For goodness' sake, Erika, just tell us what you need to say!" in frustration.
Oliver Shepheardson was beside her, their son, Danny, on his lap. He was feeding his first son while trying to get him to eat his breakfast.
Everyone at the table stopped what they were doing to pay attention to their outspoken sister.
"Alright!" Erika began, "I just don't know how to start this conversation."
Cyrus began teasing Erika by asking, "Does this have to do with your crush on Pen-thi-a?" emphasizing her best friend's name in a sing-along tone.
A blush had came cross her face from the question, while Adela, and Ella, "aww" in adoration at their sister's reaction.
Erika immediately looked down at the red oak table setting before glancing at their mother while confessing, "I am bisexual."
Oliver chuckled at her confession before covering his large lips with his golden-almond right hand as his wife, Adela, gave him a deadly glare. Everyone turned away from Erika and waited for their mother's reaction to her daughter's announcement, while baby Danny played with his food.
Anyone who comes from a Roman Catholic family knows that coming out is like being exiled. Some parents kick out their children. Others shun them. And then some push said feelings aside because it is a sin in our religion, and accept their faith rather than accepting themselves.
It is why so many people from the LGBT community despise Christian communities. They do not understand how difficult it is to come out without accepting the aftermath of their confession.
It is harder to decipher when you are taught and raised to believe that some of your beliefs are sinful in the eyes of the Lord.
Many people would say, "We are a disappointed bunch of homophobics," but not all of us feel this way.
There is a small population of Catholics who love but don't support those who dare to come out. But they aren't very common.
Their mother, Iris, slightly smiled at Erika for telling the family before kindly warning her daughter, "I wish I could protect you from the hate people will send your way, my darling. And I do admit that I do not support your choice... for I cannot change how you feel. However, you need not worry. We will be there to love you. Not for your sinful ways of living, but you as a family member."
"Exactly," Xander states proudly, " We, Bazinsons, support all types of love. Our mother raised us to respect others. Every human is unique and has a choice on how they live their lives. For our Lord says, we should love our neighbor but not the sin they commit. Nor should we judge them for living in sin."
Adela was next to support our sister, "Our home is always open, Erika." Oliver nodded in agreement with his wife.
Erika sighed with relief as everyone took turns supporting her. As for Rowan, he would do anything to help his siblings find their happiness. Therefore, the soon-to-be twenty-year-old knew he had to abandon his goal of knowing Penthia.
Even more so, since he is an adult and Penthia had just turned sixteen.
Erika's relationship with Penthia is a mystery to the traveler. He has no idea if the two are living as a couple or just friends.
Nevertheless, Rowan Bazinson isn't blind.
Penthia Athy looks gorgeous tonight. And-- that dam black dress!
It perfectly enhances all of her curves, making Rowan want to break the Family Promise and see Erika's childhood best friend as more than a forbidden temptation.
To prevent himself from being near Penthia Athy, Rowan walks out the door with one text message,
10:30 pm to Kaka 🟤 from Runway Ro
Hey Eri! I am here. I will be waiting outside next to our Uber.
Please come quickly.
Thanks, RR.
10.31 pm to Runway Ro 🟢 from Kaka
K, I am on my way. I just need to say goodbye. See you soon.
Rowan takes a sigh of relief from his big nose while he brushes his fingers through his shoulder-length curly hair.
Seeing the club's door closed behind him gives Rowan hope of keeping his distance from her.
Yet, the travelers would never admit it to anyone.
Rowan Bazinson can see Penthia Athy.

After reading the paperless invitation to their famous family reunion in her email, Pen shrieks with excitement, the sound echoing through her empty apartment as one of her many childhood dreams comes true this summer.
The Bazinson Family reunion is a private event, open only to a select few by invitation.
It is one of the events Erika dreads most every year, but she never subjects her best friend to it.
Penthia is uncertain why she has not received invitations to the previous thirteen family events since everyone considers her part of the Bazinson family. She never thought much about the lack of invites until today, but then, again, she recalls a conversation she had with Erika about the restriction.
Nineteen-year-old Erika stated one quote about the reunions before changing the subject, "Pen, Xander, strictly forbids people outside of their family to join due to some college friends of Cyrus breaking something, which he had to pay for, and the nasty breakup one of the brothers had with his vile girlfriend."
Curious as seventeen-year-old Pen was in those years, she asked several of the eldest siblings about it in a few words. No one would give her more information about the situation except for ten-year-old Ella. Once everyone in the household was asleep, Pen received a text from Ella on her iPad with all the details.
As always, Ella knew everything that happened in the family, but since she loves Pen as a sister, she knew Penthia would not tell anyone what she knew, and the same went for the writer.
In Ella's message, she wrote.
"Since I know you will not tell anyone what I am saying.
Here is the truth.
One reason for the strict restriction is that two of the sorority's bros from Cyrus' Uni days broke a vase in XXXX at an expensive resort in London.
I could not hear what they broke. But Xander was pissed.
As for the second reason, it was due to the tension the family witnessed.
Can you believe that Rowan's cheating ex-girlfriend, Sarah, accused him of becoming her boyfriend only for him to get closer to her little cousin?
I can't tell you more about Rowan's life. But thank goodness! Snaky Sarah is gone."
To this day, the mystery cousin topic has never let Pen.
Still, Pethina Athy knows she is missing something.
Ella is hiding a secret from Pen out of loyalty to Rowan, and Erika is withholding information for unknown reasons. These two facts bug Pen because she loves gossiping. But after years of gaining access as an honorary family member, Pen lets go of her gossipy ways for the sake of her friendship with Eloise.
Pen brushes those thoughts of the past from her mind as she begins listing out several outfits she needs for next weekend.
A new swimsuit for the Friday night pool party, a formal dress or two for the first dinner-
Oh! She could invite the Bazinson sisters to go shopping with her.
"Yes, that is what I will do!' Pen thinks before looking at the invite one last time on her phone and opening her text messages.
She checks her messages and sends a group message to Erika, Adela, Ella, and Vati, then adds Eashita to the chat for moral support.
Aug xx,
Monday at 10:00 am.
The Ladies Bazinson group chat plus Eashita.
Pen: I just received the invitation from the Bazinson family. Is anyone interested in going shopping for the reunion today or this weekend?
Eashita: OMG 🤯. I just got the first invite to the reunion! Thanks, Didi!
Ella: No! I wanna go! 😭. I am studying for my last final for the week. She texts a 😭😭😭💜💞.
Pen: Aw, Ella, don't worry!🌻 Maybe next time!🥺
Ella: 👯♀️🫶🏻.
Vati: It took some convincing Xan. But both of you are considered part of the family. Plus, this tradition needs a bit of revamping. What do you think?
Pen: Thank you, Vati. I greatly appreciate the invitation.
After responding to Vati's message, a new text message chat opens.
10:04 am.
Private message from Eashita P.
Eashita: Yes, Pen! I most definitely can go.💸💰💳 Do you want me to help you catch a HungryTravelerMan's attention? 😉.
The realization of meeting Rowan Bazinson for the first time after her drunk Instagram message is nerve-racking. 'There is no way in hell I can do this!' So, Pen starts to make excuses for not attending the event as she panics at the idea of meeting Ro.
Pen: OMG! 😱🫣 I forgot he would be there. 😰 Do you think Vati would mind if I declined the invite?
Eashita: Please do not miss Pen! Didi had to work hard to get her husband to invite us. Don't let your insecurities keep you from talking to Rowan.
Pen: 🫣😩🧎🏻♀️➡️
Eashita replies.
Pen, think of this faith! It is just like all those romance stories you write.
Maybe it is a sign to take a chance on wooing him. 👩🏼❤️💋👨🏽
The romance writer inside of Pen knows Eashita is right.
'To reassure yourself of Rowan's interest in knowing you, you must make the move and talk to him. ' Pen's inner thoughts tell her.
Pen: Okay. Just don't say anything about my crush on Rowan!!! 🫨🤫 The last thing I need is the Bazinson siblings teasing me.
Embarrassment washes over Pen's horrified face as she pictures Cy teasing her with some childlike riddle. First come love, then come marriage- Pen erases the thought of the artist's teasing from her creative mind as Eashita's reply comes forward.
Eashita: Don't worry, Pen, I gotcha! 🤐
Pen's smile widens at the sight of Eashita's supportive message before entering their group chat.

Vati: Np. As for shopping, I wish I could go—😢.
Erika: No, thank you! 😡🙅🏻♀️ I will pass.
Besides, we shouldn't buy those items from awful fast-fashion places.
Pen laughs after seeing a short text message from Erika with a side remark.
If there is one thing she has learned about the family. It is that four of the siblings despise listening to Erika rant on and on about how bad their world is. The only exception is Rowan. Therefore, Erika is holding back on her political views.
Cyrus cautiously admitted this to Pen during her first summer at Lindsey Hall.
"Thank you so much, Pen! Now that Rowan has begun traveling more, Erika has never had someone to bounce her ideas off. I hope you can keep being her best friend after high school, but let her know when you need space. Eloise cannot pick up on social cues."
After learning this, Pen waits for her best friend to send her another article from her perspective on shopping tonight.
No matter what, Penthia loves Erika for who she is, and Erika does the same.
Pen was about to respond when she received another message from Vati.
Vati: This will be my first time helping Lady Iris with the family reunion. 😨 So, I must decline. Have a good time, ladies 💋.
Adela: Did someone say, a girl's day! 👂🏻😁. I need some TLC, count me in! 🙋🏼♀️💅🏻.
Eashita: You know my answer already. Yes!!! 👚👕👖👛👠
Pen: Great! See you later today, Delly and Eashita!
Adela: Yes!!!! Bye. 💃.
Eashita: On my way, now! 🚗
Pen closes her text message as she starts getting ready for the shopping.
By five o'clock on Wednesday night in the Stonewood Mall, Penthina Athena Athy became a nervous wreck.
'Don't think so negatively about yourself, ' she replays on repeat in her mind while her right knee goes up and down from the nerves of what is about to happen.
Right now. Eashita makes a few encouraging remarks about how amazing Pen would look in a one-piece bathing suit she found outside the fitting room, as Erika's eldest sister, Adela, looks for the suit in a larger size.
"Pen, you will look amazing in that suit!" She begins by whispering, "That traveler will die when he sees you."
Pen can't see what Eashita saw because her eyes narrowed in on the fat under her armpits while the now-manicured fingers of her right hand pulled up the strap over the lump on said fat.
It takes a thin blond lady with green eyes and beige skin to open the tan curtain between the room and Macy's dirty fitting room hallway for Pen to stare at her through the three-mirror display.
"Penthia!" She asks in a playful tone, "Who is Ashi talking about?"
Pen rolls her eyes while Erika's sister chuckles at the redhead's reaction.
"Oh, is it someone I know!" She asks with an amused expression on her tired face.
"Delly, I am not telling you," Pen admits while she thinks about Adela's older brother.
"Aw, why not!" Adela asks with a pout as she hands Pen the next size-up bathing suit.
"Adela, I am allowed to have secrets!"Pen playfully scolds the now almost mother of two.
"Please tell me who it is, Pen. If this person is someone Olivie and I know, we can help you!" Adela begs, almost falling on her knees for crumbs.
Pen wanted to tell Delly about her crush on Rowan, but she knew Adela would not have just Oliver scheming, but all of the Bazinson sisters. The more people know of her feelings for Rowan, the more chances of Erika wedging her way into Penthia's future with her older brother.
No! She must stay strong.
"I am sorry, Delly." Pen begins to say, but Adela nods in acceptance.
Adela takes a second to smile at Pen with happiness behind her bloodshot eyes before stating in a joyful tone, "Well, no matter who the guy is. Eashita is right! He will see you and fall in love with you. I am sure of it, Pen."
Penthia nods, a beaming smile on her worried face, as Adela's words give her the confidence to try the new suit size.
"You might be right!" Pen mumbles, "I just hope R-he can see me."
🌻 6 The Invitation 🌻

🌻 7 Eashita's Plan A 🌻
Eashita Patel
After five years of dating Xander Bazison, Lilavati and her extended family stay at the Bazison country estate, Lindsey Hall, for the summer of XXXX.
That night, Vati was introduced to his family as he prepared Lilavati to be his new Viscountess with a proposal at the end of their visit. Their families were thrilled to know that the eldest was proposing that night. Expect for Eashita. She was mourning over the loss of the what-if scenario with the Viscount while she watched from the balcony.
Through her teary eyes, Eashita noticed Rowan standing to her right, silently drinking what she counted as his sixth drink of the evening.
Their first conversation began when Rowan said casually, "Miss. Patel, you look just how I feel..."
He paused, bracing himself against the wall behind Eashita for balance, then slurred, "Heartbroken and betrayed by someone you thought would be the one for you."
Eashita was shocked by his teasing comment and asked, "How can you? When I have not said a word to you until today?"
Rowan took his time with his answer. He took a sip from his crystal cup before replying, "Your brown eyes are shining from the tears you are holding in as you watch my brother introducing your sister to our mother. Biting your bottom lip is another factor. Tightening your jaw is also a coping mechanism that helps prevent you from saying anything. Overall, this scene is killing you!"
Unable to voice the truth behind Rowan's words, Eashita kept her pain guarded and offered him only a fragment of her heart—a desperate wish for the tenderness she longed for but could not claim.
"Rowan!" Eashita collected her thoughts for that night before confessing. "Apart from not knowing you, you are close to describing how I feel about the situation. In a way, I wish to have what Vati has for me, to find someone who can love me over anyone in this world, and he sees me!"
Before Eashita could turn away to face the marble wall Rowan was leaning on, the tears came down her brown eyes and onto her cheeks without a second to compose herself. His navy blue eyes expressed how sorry he was that his brother was hurting her, but his response made her night better.
"My brother is not worth your tears, Miss Eashita. If anything, I am certain you are a woman who does not need a man to sweep you off your feet. You are more than capable of loving yourself."
Eashita smiled at his reply, curious to learn more about him.
"And what about you, Mr. Runaway Rowan? Is there a woman who is causing you so much pain?" she asked.
Rowan chuckled at the nickname his family gave him before giving any response to her question."
"No, Sarah and I broke up when I turned twenty." He took a sip of his drink before cautiously confessing. "There is a teenager, well, now a woman, who has caught my eye since I was nineteen. She is so gorgeous. And she is motivated to make a name for herself by writing her first novel. But I cannot be with her."
Eashita's heart swelled from hearing him talk about the woman in his mind, and she had to ask, "Would you let me know who it is?"
Rowan nodded and said softly, "Her name is Penthia Athenia Athy. She has been Erika's best friend since high school, and my sister has forbidden me from meeting her."
Eashita's lips curled into a genuine smile as she listened to Rowan's heartfelt confession about admiring Penthia from afar. His vulnerability stirred a hopeful ache within her, reigniting a spark of belief in love's possibilities. In that moment, she yearned to be the bridge for two souls longing to find one another, holding onto the dream that perhaps, for once, fate could be kind.
After their first interaction, Eashita knew Rowan Bazinson was Pethnia Athy's soulmate.
A year after receiving the wedding invitation, Eashita was obliged to attend the wedding as a bridesmaid, and Pen could not be her escort because of their family promise.
Since her sister is married to the family, she had to comply with their request, or else she would be removed from the party. Her eldest sister, Vati, made Rowan her partner for the wedding crew entrance, and he made that night bearable by making her laugh with jokes that Penthia would adore, dad jokes, and gossip. She could picture her confirmation friend sitting beside her at the ceremony while Rowan was on her other side.
Sadly, Erika is the reason they don't have a relationship.
Whenever Pen was at a Bazinson party, Eashita was not allowed to tell Penthia about their relationship because Erika had possession of her time.
At first, Eashita didn’t understand why Erika controlled Penthia's time at gatherings until Rowan privately revealed the truth to her.
Erika has been secretly harboring feelings for her best friend, and Eashita can see the fear in her sister's eyes at the prospect of losing Penthia to her brother.
That knowledge unsettles her, a constant, gnawing worry that lingers no matter how she tries to shake it off—a burden she carries in the silence between breaths.
Many would believe Eashita would be jealous of their friendship. That thought has never crossed her mind.
In Eashita's opinion, Pen's isolation from the Bazinson siblings due to Erika's friendship is unhealthy.
Still, Eashita knows she has no say in Penerika's friendship. She now spends time with the third Bazinson. She enjoys Lady Iris's gatherings, which happen when Rowan is in Texas. He is willing to be vulnerable around her on those days. As for his confession, Rowan never brought up Penthia again.
Eashita is not a woman who would get involved in anyone's love life, but she feels fate is pulling Pen and Rowan together, and she will make it possible. Learning that Penthia met Rowan through his blog was the first sign for Eashita to plan a meeting this year.
The fashionista also noticed that the third-born brother would find ways to look at Penthia from a distance whenever Erika was preoccupied with another sibling.
Powan, the ship name she made up for Penthia, and Rowan are like the couples in her favorite romance novels.
To witness Pen almost realizing that dream is everything the cosplayer wanted for her best friend.
For reasons she cannot fully explain, Eashita's heart aches for Pen to discover her own happiness. She fervently believes Pen deserves this chance at a fairy-tale ending—a gift from the universe after enduring a childhood marred by pain and her cruel mother's shadow.
Plus, she knows Rothia- no, Powan loves the 1800s era, loves to write, and the pair are romantics.
Rowan would never admit it to his brothers, but he loves writing poetry, loves friend-to-lovers movies, and often steals borrowed books from the library during Pen's summer visits. Meanwhile, Pen wants to find a wonderful man who wears his heart on his sleeve, is willing to take a chance on being friends before a relationship, and loves movies like The Vow, A Walk to Remember, Marry Me, and so much more.
Another plus is knowing Powan despises Titanic and The Notebook.
Pen would say, "Gah, awful and such a predictable plotline. Plus, Noah is so dammed manipulator!"
Meanwhile, Rowan would agree with a reply, "Gah, this is torture. How can people watch this dam movie about a ship of people dying?"
Eashita smiled as she reminisced, sitting beside her sister Vati in her apartment. Vati, observing Eashita's faraway look, waited patiently for her to leave her daydream.
Both sisters share the same brown doe eyes, large noses, thick eyelashes, and long brown hair.
That is the end of their similarities.
After their father passed away, Vati had to become the breadwinner. Meanwhile, Eashita was allowed to become a dreamer who loves reading and fashion.
Due to their different personalities, their relationship was nonexistent. Vati wanted Eashita to have everything she could not obtain for herself, and she placed so much pressure on Eashita. Her attention had to be solely on her studies, rather than on finding love. Meanwhile, Eashita always wanted to please her sister and have a sibling relationship with Vati. She did everything Vati asked without any affection.
In many ways, their opposing dreams erected walls between them, severing any hope for true sisterly intimacy—until, unexpectedly, Xander appeared, a gentle force that began to soften what had once hardened. Now, Vati and Xander have softened around their loved ones. Sure, their relationship was horrible at the beginning. But after years of being part of their lives, Xandvati has a strong bond with the family.
Eashita felt a darker brown hand rest upon her right elbow before hearing Vati gently ask, "Bon, are you alright?"
Eashita thinks over the plans before opening them up to Vati.
"Didi, you remember what I told you about Powen?" Eashita asks.
An amused smile spread on Vati's lips. She teased, "Is this why you asked Xand to take Lyon for a walk?"
Eashita gives Vati a guilty shoulder gesture before replying in a warning tone, "What I am going to tell you must stay between us. Erika cannot know what I am telling you. Promise me, Didi?"
Vati nods 'okay' before asking, "Then why are you bringing it up?"
"Powan deserves to meet each other, and I want you to help me show Rowan that Pen is his purpose. I am certain he will move for Pen and live in Los Angeles!" Eashita admits.
"Ah, so that is why you forwarded the Riverside Villa?" Vati asks in a teasing tone.
"Yes," Eashita admits. "This is my plan A. Part 1 is to give Powan the slight push they need to become friends. The second part happens once Pen receives the Bazinson Family Reunion Invitation."
Vati warms Eashita, "This may not work in your favor, Bon."
Eashita slouches from Vati's comment before confessing, "Pen is trying to get Rowan to notice her."
Vati's eyes widen in shock," Oh, this is serious!"
"Penthia has never wanted to put herself out there, and I want to help her," Eashita admits. "Knowing her, Pen would want to go shopping after receiving the invitation. If Pen does a full makeover, then I might be able to convince her to go back to her natural hair color."
Vati warns her, "I encourage you not to do anything foolish, Bon."
Eashita pleads with a desperate tone, "Vati, please!"
"Rowan should not have told you about his kink for redheads," Vati fumes in an aggravated whisper.
Eashita whines as she takes a different approach.
"Vati, this is your chance to return the favor." Eashita starts to beg.
Vati begins to nod no while Eashita continues." Penthia introduced you to Xander Javier. Without her, you would still be a stubborn woman with a stick up your butt."
Vati scoffs at Eashita's comment.
"Penthia has always had feelings for Rowan since she was sixteen," Eashita confesses.
"How is that possible?" Vati asks. "Erika made it impossible for her to meet him." Eashita smiles in excitement at her question.
"Penthia has been following his blog since the summer before her freshman year. She knew Rowan before meeting Erika," Eashita states with a smirking smile on her gleeful face.
Vati gasps in shock, "How is that possible?" before asking, "How did you find out?"
"Last night during the birthday party, Erika teased Pen about it. Penthia flushed red from the comment." Eashita states in a neutral tone, " It was confirmed when I saw how Powen was looking at each other at the bar."
Vati scoffs, "You are too old to believe in fate, Bon. Those silly ideas only exist in those ridiculous romance books. Life is not like that, and you know better."
"Didi. Their eyes were pretty much eye-fucking each other last night." Eashita states in a giddy tone.
"Imagine the chemistry they will have when they meet. Ah!! I hope to see them in the same room together soon!"
Vati sighs in frustration at Eashita's antics while she rolls her eyes before replying. "Okay!" She shouts at the romantic lover as she calms down and replies. "I will try my best to help you! But you cannot let any of the Bazinsons know that I helped you push Rowan to meet Pen. The last thing we need is for Xander to revoke the next invite."
Eashita shouts in contentment at hearing her response, then a bronze man with a fantastic tan enters her studio apartment, irritated by a small brown corgi dog as the animal approaches his owner's lap.
"Lyon! Off the sofa!" The man orders the dog, then, frustrated, runs his right hand through his wavy brown hair.
"Don't listen to him, Lyon. " Vati babies Lyon as she gives the dog kisses.
Lyon happily accepts Vati's affection as his tail wags backward and forward in excitement.
Xander rolls his brown eyes at his wife's comment, and Eashita laughs at his expression until her sister gives her husband a warning glare.

🌻8 The Riverside Country Villa 🌻
Penthia's mouth drops into an O shape at the home before her.
No, this romance author couldn't say this is a home. The location is where she could picture herself getting married in her dreams.
'The Riverside Country Villa is enormous!' was her first thought as she drove past the ornate kissing gate.
Once Penthia's white P.T. Cruiser drives through the beginning of the long gravel road, Pen sees two over-the-top rose bushes in a maze pattern and a line of palm trees between the road and the four acres of the villa's landscape.
The villa is a 1800s-style Regency mansion that Pen loves to write in her stories. The triangular rooftop support system has three brown pillars, while the three-story brown brick building is draped with vines bearing pink lotus flowers and white roses. In the middle of the entrance is an elegant stone imperial stairway, and four grand pots of red and pink flowers greet the ends of the grey marble staircase rail.
The one thing that ruins the place's exterior, in Pen's opinion, is the middle, where a modern Dutch door replaces the original.
The small wooden door looks out of place against the surrounding stone bricks. But
Pen has to accept that sometimes regency materials are hard to come by in modern times. After stopping for a few seconds to stare at the mansion in disbelief, Pen felt like a little girl jumping for joy. Knowing she will live one of her dreams for one week is exciting, but it also inspires her to write.
Sadly, she has to wait until she has Wi-Fi access to write a new story.
Nevertheless, Penthia Athy is sure this vacation will change her life.
For the better, who knows?
"I am staying in a historical mansion," Pen whispers in awe, her eyes filled with joy.
This writer turns off the car's engine, unbuckles her seat belt, and opens the door without looking away from the villa.
It takes Pen a few seconds to notice several other cars already parked in front of the quad with a fancy fountain in between. Some are rentals near LAX, but the one that catches her eye is Erika's Mercedes bins.
"Pen!" She hears Erika before seeing her from the top of the imperial.
Pen laughs as she sees her best friend running down in her direction in her long Bridgerton blue cardigan and the crochet beanie that Pen made her for Christmas two years ago.
"Ooff" escapes Pen's lips as Erika hugs her like she didn't see her yesterday.
Feeling her best friend's arms around her petite form warms Pen's heart with the love and attention Erika gives her as she tries to breathe through her mouth. Pen was about to say something about loving her friend's hugs when they heard an unrecognizable tenor male voice shout from above.
"Erika, I don't think your friend Pen can breathe!"
Pen's body stiffens at the sound of the most musical voice in her life, while her best friend shifts to a side hug to face one of her older brothers. Within seconds of searching for the source of the voice, she sees his beautiful, navy-blue eyes, tousled, curly, dark-brown hair, and warm, sun-kissed skin.
HungryTravelerMan and Rowan Bazinson walk down the stairs quickly, but from Pen's point of view, he looks like one of those romantic characters who is slowly looking at her with a smirk on his medium-sized lips.
Rowan's eyes stare at Pen with amusement behind them while she realizes how short she is as he walks closer to the two ladies.
According to her doctor, she is five-one while all the Bazinsons are taller than her. Rowan is a whole foot taller than her, to be exact, six feet tall!
'Oh my goodness, he is hot!' Pen thought while she took this time to see what he was wearing.
Unlike everyone else in the family, Rowan wore a less expensive outfit. A pair of navy blue Levi's, white Converse, a casual t-shirt, and a pair of black sunglasses on his curly hair; the whole outfit made him look like a model. Knowing Rowan was here, this opportunity gave Pen time to charm him with her choice of outfit for the evening.
Unlike many women in her age group, Penthia loves wearing historical outfits, and today she is wearing one of her favorites.
It is a green regency dress with blue lace, while her hair is back to its original red, with full-on, natural pin-up curls, crochet green flowers, and diamond wedding pins.
Eashita helped her sew last year for the fantasy ball. Her friend asked her to wear it because the YouTuber wanted to take photos for her next video.
"Ah, hello, Miss Penthia Athy! It is nice to see the face of the woman who sent such wonderful messages from Instagram." Rowan replies as if he just told the perfect joke of the century.
Pen's blue eyes widen in shock at his greeting before she hears Erika ask," Pen, what is my brother talking about?"
Neither of the two explains to the third wheel in their conversation just what they are talking about. Instead, Penthia stopped working like those memes from Tumblr, and all she could think was, 'Fuck. He read her Instagram messages. Fuck!'
"Nothing, Erika! Let us bring Miss Athy, shall we?" Rowan disregards her question before walking behind the two ladies.
Pen nods in agreement with his response while her face flushes tomato red.
"We are talking about this later," Erika whispers in her left ear as her best friend pulls her into a side hug.
Pen couldn't say much but nodded okay to Erika's request before glancing behind them to see
Rowan followed them with her luggage before giving her a mischievous grin on his handsome face at seeing her attention to him. He gives her a wink of a smile, and Pen looks away, feeling her tomato face turn cherry red.
"Yup, I am fucked." Pen thought as the three walked up the stairway and into the mansion.

🌻 9 The Seating Chart 🌻
Pen could see countless acres of green grass and a large garden at the center, filled with vegetables, rose bushes, and orange trees.
In front of the French double doors to the backyard are two yards of red brick and a wooden pergola-gazebo supported by six white wooden poles. On the left side of the patio area is a large wooden twelve-by-eighteen Oval Cedar Gazebo painted in a light grey stain, with flower beds on each side of the six structural rails. On the right side is a bar set with the latest cooking appliances, a sink, a mini steel refrigerator, and a lounge area. The floor area features repurposed stones from the previous well that the owner removed, and the bar has six to eight stools with tall backs. The steel stools are painted black with dark cyan cushions and face the lounge area.
The lounge area has a pool shaped like a bean with ten or more purple lounge chairs. Behind the pool is another section with an oval picnic table. The table has a built-in Lazy Boy and access to a campfire site.
Far beyond the seven acres of land lie small mountains that give the villa a sense of privacy and make up for the lack of a backyard fence. Along the property's borders, there are trees and more bushes.
"Wow!" Pen hears a teenage girl say from behind her.
"Indeed." Pen comments before facing the baby of the Bazinson family, Gabriella.
Long gone are the brown curls on the slim teenager. In their place is wavy gold-brown hair with blonde highlights.
This Texian girl beams with joy, her brown eyes shining with the excitement of being away from home. Like most teens at this stage of life, she is wearing the latest 90s trends and has, luckily, passed on the thinning of her gorgeous eyebrows.
"Ella, how did your finals go at Burkkey?" Pen asks the eighteen-year-old girl.
"Gah, Ella begins to dread before adding, "No, do not talk to me about it. I don't want to think about school until the next semester begins."
Pen chuckles at how overly dramatic Ella becomes whenever someone talks about a topic she dislikes.
Ella confines to Pen, "I am so glad you got an invitation to the family reunion! Now, this summer will be more fun with you here!"
Pen replies, "Are you ready for board game night?"
"Yes!" Ella shouts in excitement. "I hope you can be my partner for the whole summer."
"Nah," Pen states, "You and I both know that Erika will murder you."
Ella gives a mischievous wink as she confidently states, "We will see about that."
Pen laughs at her comment while she nods in disbelief.
Knowing how competitive Ella is about losing to her brothers in a sport that Pen loves to witness. Unlike the rest of the family, Penthia and Eashita don't brag after winning a game; they are very strategic. Whenever it comes to playing mind games, everyone fights to be on either of the girls' teams. It is why Penthia knows she is Ella's secret weapon whenever they play at family game nights.
Ella and Pen kept talking about everything under the sun as they waited for the rest of the family to join them outside.
It is now 7:00 p.m., but for anyone who doesn't know about California time changes, the sun is about to set, and the stars are about to shine.
The patio area has several wooden oval dining sets on five coffee-brown stain tables. Each table has five seating sets, gorgeous dinnerware from Lady Iris's oldest China, and purple napkins with silver rings holding the fan napkins in place.
It is strange to see a seating chart for a big family at each place setting, but Lady Bazinson says,"
The best way to have harmony is to have everyone surrounded by those with whom you have a strong bond."
Pen always found the sentiment enduring until this moment.
Penthia Athy's name card is between Eashita Patel and Rowan Chrystopher Bazinson.
"Great!" Pen thought as she took notice of Lady Iris's cursive penmanship.
How is she able to interact with her best friend's brother when he recently read her humiliating messages on Instagram?
That night was supposed to be a way of interaction. And now, Penthia will have to spend the whole weekend beside him.
Oh, how Godness, the Lord is punishing Penthia for her lustful thoughts right now.
"No fucking way!" Ella states in glee as she sits across from Rowan's seating position. "Erika goes ballistic to know she is on the other table and not next to you."
Pen nervously sighs at Ella's comment before saying something she would later regret, "Well, it is a good thing about your mother's rule."
Ella gives her a mischievous smile, "You are quite correct, Penthia. Perhaps this will make the trip more memorable."
Pen opens her mouth to warn Ella not to do something drastic, but then closes it when she hears a sliding door opening.
"Ah, there you are!" a young male teen states from the backyard's main entrance.
Ella and Pen turn around in their seats to find a boyish teen in a black shirt and a pair of blue jeans. His swan-like neck is set with the newest headphones, connected to the latest iPhone, and his thin beige fingers rest on the door's handle.
"Gabriel Andreas, close the dam door." They hear Xander shout from inside the kitchen area.
Both ladies giggle at Xander's comment while Gab rolls his green eyes in annoyance.
"Oh, brother." He mumbles while making his way towards the center of the patio area.
Gab turns on an LED projector with a slick grey remote, then sets it up for tonight's entertainment. The projector box hovers between two of the five tables and blinks red to let him know it is turning on.
"Oh, are we having a movie night!" Ella exclaims in excitement.
Pen was about to ask another question when a gorgeous supermodel lady with dark skin, long curly hair, and brown eyes entered the patio area.
"Vati, I am setting it up. Don't worry." Gab yells from behind a big mixer setup as he connects every wire.
Vati responds, "Good! Everyone should be down soon." She stands beside the front of the French double doors.
Pen was about to open her mouth to ask Vati about tonight's events when she saw four Shure microphones on the foldable table beside the project screen, and everything clicked into place.
"Oh shit, we are doing Karaoke night." Ella and Pen state in unison.
Dread comes across Pen's face while Ella stares at Pen with a Harley Quinn smile.

🌻 10 The Common Ground 🌻
The Riverside Villa looks like a museum.
The high ceiling and chrome arches are the first materials of the home to catch Rowan Bazinson's attention before taking in the high ceilings of the grand breakfast room.
The small beans that make up the tiles above with engraved flowers glide the observer towards the ceiling's center point, the chandelier, and all its tiny details fascinate him.
The painted ceilings frame the room with elegance, while the tent-and-bag chandelier, with its crystal droplets, shines brightly through the mansion's numerous casement windows.
Rowan can spend several hours describing the room, but he won't. Instead, he will spend the rest of his morning taking snippet videos and photos for his best doll friend, Eashita's (Ita for short) channel, Lady Ashita.
Once Ita learned the villa's location from her sister, Vati, the cosplayer and sewist, asked Penthia for help showcasing her latest historically accurate projects in a single video. As for him, Rowan would do anything except date or marry Ita for the success of her career.
After all, Rowan was present when Ita started her channel in XXXX, and he saw her distaste for the fashion industry.
That night after posting her first video, Ita told Rowan, " All women should be able to wear any period fashion, Wan! Not just the popular shape in fashion magazines! All body shapes are beautiful and unique. Therefore, I will make more than one garment for each video!"
And Ita did not disappoint.
After the first video, Penthia constantly helped his doll friend out with each project, and he could tell how much enjoyment Ita's audience had in seeing Penthia in the reveal shots and Miss Athy's beaming face from helping Ita's vision come to life.
Today, Eashita and Penthia look great in their ball gowns, and everything goes fantastically until the undergarments photoshoot begins.
Penthia Athy is wearing F** long-conical mid-18th-century stays in cream white. And Rowan Bridgerton is struggling to concentrate on the task at hand.
Those small pieces of clothing, once-thin undergarments, draw attention to the top assets of the curvy lady before him, and the third-born Bazinsonn cannot think straight.
'Rowan, you are a gentleman!' he repeated like a madman, as part of him below stirred at the sight of Penthia's glorious chest through the camera lens.
Penthia is posing like a Greek statue of Venus, her blue eyes staring at him as if she were hiding a secret. Pulling him into the depths of her soul with one look on her face, desire?
No, that cannot be right.
Perhaps it is all in his mind.
"My goodness, if I didn't know any better, Wan. I would say your sword is enjoying the show." Ita taunts her guy friend before taking Penthia's place.
Rowan breaks out of his thoughts as he becomes a professional cameraman by adjusting Eashita's latest camera.
"Shut it, Ita!" he states through his teeth while Ita chuckles at Rowan's demise.
The breakfast room becomes warm for Rowan as Penthia decides to kill him by standing way too close to his body, as Eashita takes her sweet time finalizing her next posing position.
Rowan strains his eyes away from Penthia's glorious chest and feigns fascination with the nearest piece of furniture, a mahogany settee.
The silence between them is awkward for both parties.
Yet neither knew how to start a conversation with the other.
Rowan finds the lack of communication unbearable. He wants to compliment Penthia but doesn't want to offend her by looking at her undressed figure.
Meanwhile, Pen tries to think of something to talk to him about as a distraction, without appearing desperate to find common ground. Knowing she is not wearing many clothes does not stop her mind from panicking.
Of course, Penthia and Rowan will not know each other's point of view about this awkward first conversation until the far future of this story.
"This place has such a fascinating history." Penthia randomly states in a whisper.
"There is a tragic but beautiful story behind the regency owners of this home."
Hearing Penthia talk about the estate's history draws Rowan's attention back to her.
"Really, how do you know this when we just got here?" He states with amusement behind his mischievous eyes while he keeps his attention on her face.
Penthia beams at his question, "I have a degree in English and History. Research comes with the territory."
Rowan looks owlish at her response while he thinks of something to keep their conversation going.
"Please, tell me what you learn!" He states with interest behind his blue eyes.
Pen nods okay: "Lord James Maine was the owner of this estate in the late 1850s. He gained money by working with and against the law. In the beginning, there weren't homes for the rich in Mexico. Lord Maine made his money by building homes for aristocrats who left Britain for several unknown reasons, and they kept their mouths shut whenever they saw Lord James doing something suspicious."
Rowan smiles at hearing Penthia's excitement behind each of her words, "You said there is a tragedy. Where does this come into his life?"
Pen looks at him in shock. "Oh, I thought you wouldn't be interested in knowing."
Rowan hums nope at her confession, "I am not like other men. History, Math, and romance are my favorite subjects. Please tell me more, Miss Athy."
"Rowan, we aren't living in the Regency period. You can call me by my Christian name. Penthia or Pen." She states, amused, at his politeness.
Rowan gently confesses, "Knowing how sensitive certain names are for women due to verbal abuse from their past experiences. I didn't want to assume by using Pen as a nickname."
"Thank you, Rowan! That means a lot to me." Pen states in relief, "The only nickname I cannot stand is Penny."
Rowan knows that asking Pen about her reason for not liking the name Penny as a 'name of endearment'could bring back traumatic memories. So, he melodically begs, "Pen, please tell me more! You must not leave me with such expense."
Pen chuckles at his dramatic declaration, "Lord James Maine had fallen in love with a lady-breed named Lilyth Sara Paterson. They met while he came over to work with her father at the Paterson estate, and they began secretly courting after Lord James offered Lilyth a piece of cake."
Hearing the name Sara has made Rowan feel uneasy. But he doesn't let Pen see it on his face. Rather than talk about his past, Rowan nods, "Go on, I am listening," while Pen continues her research tale. "Before they could get married, James was killed in his study. "
Curious to know what happened next for Lilyth, Rowan asks, "Did he ruin her?"
Pen nods yes while adding in sadness, "Lilyth's courses stopped mid-May, her maid-in-waiting told her father's housekeeper that she didn't bleed, and the poor lady of nine and ten was removed from the Paterson estate by her father. After hearing about her pregnancy through a family friend, the new Lord Maine was willing to marry her because he needed an heir, and she gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. After the twins' birth, Lilyth had postpartum depression. The doctors didn't know about the condition because medical studies weren't up to standard at that period. During the winter of 1902, she went for a walk at their country home, reached the lake, and drowned. There is no further information about the new Lord Maine after the twins were adopted by the kind Lord, as his family was isolated from the rest of the ton. However, the second home no longer exists. As for the scene where Lilyth's dead body was located. The lake is still there and is in the process of becoming a lake resort."
Rowan didn't know what to say about the information Pen gave him.
The thought of a man not knowing love had to take on the children of his brother is such a horrible story.
Rowan's romantic side hopes the new Lord Maine can find his soulmate. He believes everyone deserves to find love.
One way or another, everyone has that one person they cannot live without.
Nevertheless, Rowan Bazinson found Pen's knowledge of history irresistible.
The fact that she loves romance stories and treasures history as much as he does is a bonus.
There is no doubt in his mind that Penthia Athenia Athy is a wonderful woman, and the young man could see her becoming someone very special to him shortly.
The only thing Rowan can't wrap his head around is his feelings for her.
Is he attracted to her because he is lusting for her?
Or is there something more?

🌻 11 Karaoke Night 🌻
As with every family game night, the beginning of Bazinson Karaoke Night is competitive and enjoyable. Viscount Xander and his wife, Vati, compete against one another and against every other Bazinson sibling. The eldest-sibling couple opens Friday night with a duet to Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69."
The only difference is that anyone could write a name on the list of singing contestants.
Right now, Dowager Iris dances with little Danny in her arms while she keeps her blue eyes on Erika.
The mother of six prevents her second-oldest daughter from moving to sit next to Penthia for the night. Besides the pair, Adela and her husband, Oliver, cheer, "Yay, you show us Xand and Vait!" while Erika tries several escape routes to no avail.
Pen's oval-shaped face looks in the dowager's direction, confused from not finding Erika beside her. Then she hears Rowan declare to Eashita in amusement,
"Poor Ka, my siblings were ordered through text that Mom wants Erika to spend the weekend with her siblings rather than with Penthia."
"Really!" Eashita says, in a somewhat fake surprise. Rowan, you must tell me?"
After hearing Easthia's fake remark and seeing her act like an old pal with Rowan, Pen asks her best friend, "Are you for real!" Gesturing with her eyebrows and eyes, she leans forward to get her attention.
Eashita ignores Penthia's reaction as she waits to hear from her best guy friend, Pen, who didn't know their friendship existed until now.
'Great!" Pen thought as she found herself a third wheel again since they got here.
Rowan enthusiastically states with amusement, "Vati told Mum that Erika spends too much time with Penthia. Mom believes El has forgotten to communicate with my other siblings."
Eashita smiles at Rowan's confession while she asks," How did Erika take it?" in a friendly tone.
Pen gives a raspberry before beginning to state in a teasing tone," As if Erika
would let her mother control her!" She lets out a hum in amusement. "If anything, Erika probably knows about your mother's scheme, am I right?" One of her eyebrows goes up.
Penthia unexpectedly smiles flirtatiously, then realizes what she is doing and softens it to a small smile. Eashita raises her hand to stop herself from almost laughing at Pen's horrible portrayal of hiding her feelings, and Penthia glares back at her.
Rowan doesn't see Eashita's reaction and turns to give Pen a cheeky smile, "My word, I didn't know you were witty."
Eashita fixes her reaction as she replies on Pen's behalf, "There is so much more to Pen than your siblings led you to believe, Wan!"
"Is that so?" Rowan exclaims as he takes his last portion of pasta salad into his mouth.
Pen was to respond with another teasing remark when she saw Erika begin walking down towards the stage set to sing.
Thankful for an excuse to step away from this conversation, she turns away from Rowan to cheer for his sister: "Let's go, Erika."
Pen waits to hear her raspy voice singing the words Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin, and of course, Erika hits each note flawlessly.
After many years of hanging out with the Bazinson family, Pen learns that almost every sibling can carry a tune, but Cyrus says Erika's ashtray sound makes her voice stand out. Xander would say it is because she smokes too much, and Pen agrees to some extent. Still, Pen loves hearing Erika sing.
Pen was about to cheer for her best friend when she noticed Ella was searching for the next song on Gab's phone from the right side of the patio.
Right next to her is their cousin, who looks like Belle from the animated Beauty and the Beast. Pen sees her writing someone's name on the Karaoke list.
The scene before her is scary.
Those two teens always have a scheme up their sleeves, and tonight is no exception. Ella has drawn her cousin Francesca into her plans.
The only question on Pen's mind is, "What are those two up to?"
Erika keeps singing while Rowan and Gab head to the long buffet-style dinner table to help themselves to a second or third plate after finishing their first.
Pen waits until Rowan is out of earshot before fumbling with her question," Eashita, how can you talk to him like you have known each other for a long time?"
"I think you meant to ask how Rowan and I know each other?" Eashita replies with uneasiness beneath her calm demeanor, then reassures her best friend that she didn't break her trust: "Pen, I pinky promise to tell you tomorrow while everyone is swimming!"
Pen didn't know whether to feel betrayed by the realization that Eashita had a friendship with Rowan. Other ladies her age would feel left out of hearing their inside jokes. Despite the truth of that statement, Penthia isn't concerned, knowing Eashita can make friends easily.
By watching their other interactions, Penthia knows she is missing some information—but she isn't sure what!
All Penitha knows is that she is anxious to know if Eashita has feelings for Rowan.
According to the many rom-coms Penthia enjoys watching daily, no woman should get in between their friend and their significant other.
Lydia, now known as Cyrus's wife for a year, is drinking her second alcoholic drink from across Pen as Cyrus cheerfully makes everyone at their table laugh from the constant commentary after every singer.
The lovely Taiwanese woman has her straight, dark brown hair curled in layers, and her dark brown eyes beam at her husband's remarks.
"Good for you, Erika! Do, show us, peasants, the benefits of your smoking habits." Cyrus teases Erika while the singer gives him the bird.
"Erika Elanie Bazinson!" Lady Iris scowls at seeing her daughter's reaction.
Lydia and Cyrus chuckle at the aftermath before hearing the song end.
The content family waits for the next participant as Ella takes one of the four microphones and shouts, "Now the moment we've all been waiting for... Rowan!
"No," Rowan whines from his seat while the rest of the family begs him to go up.
" Oh, yes, dear brother! Come, and take this microphone away from me! Please, let me out of my misery." Erika teases him.
Pen hears Lydia laugh while seeing Cyrus whisper in her ear, but she can't seem to catch what he is saying.
"Oh, Rowan, you should go up!" Adela exclaims from beside her mother's right side.
Vati chimes from Adela's left side, "Rowan, you must grace us with your talent."
Pen sees the dread from behind Rowan's dark blue eyes, so she says in a calm tone, "Rowan, you don't have to go up there. If you don't want to..."
Eashita cuts in with excitement behind her teasing comment, " Oh, Pen, you should be encouraging him to sing! And not the other way around.
Pen looks at her friend with confusion, while another light-skinned lady with brown hair and eyes adds, "Oh, that is right, Pen hasn't heard you sing! Now, you should sing, cousin!"
"Fanny." Rowan holds the 'n' of the word 'no' a little longer while the seventeen-year-old, asking him to sing, stares at him with a 'please' pout.
The adopted cousin smiles at Pen, her brown eyes saying, "You will find out why Eashita stated that comment in a few seconds."
Rowana sighs while murmuring, "Fine," before getting up from his seat.
Everyone cheers while Gab, Erika, Cyrus, and Vati shout his name until he grabs the mic from Erika's outstretched hand.
Pen then sees her best friend rushing to take Rowan's seat when Adela, with determination behind her hazel brown-green eyes, beats Erika to sitting beside Pen.
The younger sister glares at her eldest sister, "Adela, move!" as said sister taunts Erika with her medium-sized eyebrows going up, "Or what?" expression before stating in a motherly tone, "Come now, Erika. I am older than you. You should be more respectful towards me and give up this childish act of being Penthia's guard dog. Leave! Or I will tell Mother to collect you?"
Knowing that Erika is about to fight with her sister Adela over seeing her best friend grinding on her bottom teeth, Penthia decides to move away from their conversation before they put her in their fight. If there is anything this redhead knows, it is that she will be used as a teddy bear and pulled in two different directions. 'No way,' Penthia thought as she found a way to distract herself from their conversation.
Penthia moves back towards Eashita and Fanny's small conversation about their previous Karaoke night before asking," Fan and Ita, why are you so persistent on Rowan singing?"
Adela decides to answer on their behalf as Erika leaves their table in defeat." Pen! Your life will change once you hear Rowan's singing voice."
Eashita nods in agreement while Fanny adds in a teasing tone, "Delly is right, Pen! Tonight will be a moment you will never forget."
Pen is about to respond to Fanny's remark when everyone goes silent.
The song's cadence playing from the speakers makes her blue eyes widen in shock as she recognizes the song he was about to sing, her whole body facing the small stage.
Rowan Bazinson opens his luminous mouth to sing a B note, and Penthia Athy has fallen more in love with him than before.
"He is singing my favorite, Yellow by Coldplay," Pen whispers in awe of his talent.
Eashita smiles back at Pen because she knows how important this song is for her best friend before the red-haired beauty notices Rowan's eyes on her.
Shocked by his actions, Pen shyly looks away as her cheeks get warm before finding herself lost in a memory. As Rowan sings the chorus, Pen remembers her last time with her dotting father. Her mind recalls her athair's big smile while he held a bouquet of the biggest flowers she had ever seen between them.
"A bouquet of Sunflowers for my sunshine," her athair would say to her with endearment as he handed her the bouquet she would receive for her birthday.
Ten-year-old Pen blushed at hearing the call, "his sunshine!" but who could blame Mister Adain Athy when her mother made her wear a color that always washed out Pen's ivory skin?
It is one of the last good memories she had with athair until they cut his throat in May XXXX due to his gambling addiction.
Now, Pen associates sunflowers with her athair, and over the years since his death, they have become Penthia's favorite flower.
A tear from her left eye brings Pen back to the present to see Rowan sing the last notes.
Pen takes a few seconds to collect herself as her eyes hold back her emotions before hearing the singer ask. "Pen, are you alright?"
Pen is shocked to hear Rowan was in front of her so quickly. To avoid answering his question, she looks for a way to change the subject before breaking down in front of everyone.
"Rowan!", Pen exclaims with amusement behind her cracked voice, "How on earth did you get here? So, fast!"
She wipes the tears away with her napkin before finding him back in his seat with a concerned expression on his chiseled face.
Rowan shrugs, "I don't know!" and Pen can't help but laugh at his gesture, embarrassed by him seeing her cry, and soon he joins in.
For a second, their fits of laughter comfort Pen.
It is not enough to prevent Penthia from thinking of the last time her father was sober. Yet, his childish demeanor assures Pen that her relationship with Rowan could lead to something more.
Rowan and Penthia embrace the silence after their shared fits of giggles until Fanny grabs her cousin's attention.
Penthia takes this time to think about an excuse to leave when Eashita speaks into the microphone in her hands." And now that we have heard the singer in the family. Let us- give it up for Penthia Athena."
'No, ' Pen thought of the idea of singing in front of everyone.
Internally, she wanted to scream and run away.
Rather than doing that in front of Rowan, Pen takes a breath in and out to calm her nerves before walking up to the small so-called stage.
Eashita stands close to Pen and whispers, "I will sing backup with you. If you want, Erika can also come up for extra moral support. You will let me know?"
Pen surprises them both by saying, "No, I think you being here is the only support I need.
Eashita nods with an understanding smile, "Ella had Fanny write down Things I'll Never Say by Avril Lavigne."
'Shit. I knew those girls were up to something! Dam, I should have never told the pair about my crush.' Pen thought as she turned her neck over to the side before glaring at one of the two scheming ladies, directions to see Ella and Fanny high-five each other before both gave Pen a smirk back.
"I am going to murder them!" Pen declares behind her sarcastic voice as she grabs a second microphone from their position on the folded table.
Eashita chuckles at Pen's comment while her brown eyes gleefully tease her.
"Ah, so you do have a crush on Rowan. Is this why you are glaring at Fan?" Eashita asks before seeing Pen blush from her question.
Eashita was waiting for her to respond.
There was no response because Pen had just learned about Rowan's friendship with Eashita. While she is still learning about Rowan as a person, Eashtia has known him for two decades and never told her about their friendship.
In a way, Penthia wanted to confess to her Eashita. Yet she could not find the voice to say anything, for Pen sharpens her words when she is upset. Many times, those vile words can spear a heart.
Eashita realizes that Pen has been holding back from telling her anything tonight because of her recent discovery. In all the years of being friends, Eashita knows that Penthia doesn't listen to anyone when she is furious. So the YouTube sewist sighs in defeat at the writer's silence and begins the music from the iPhone.
Pen stares out into the crowd to find Erika giving her a thumbs up.
Again, her best friend is seated beside a woman who looks exactly like her daughter, to her left, while her eyes are fixed on her crush, Rowan.
The family goes wild with encouraging words: "Go Penthia Athena!" before Rownan adds, "Let the Goddess of Wisdom guide you, Pen."
The butterflies inside Pen's stomach begin to flutter as the entrance to the song plays.

🌻 12 The misunderstanding 🌻
Eashita notices Penthia watching her interactions with Rowan. Pen’s curious stares began during Friday’s photoshoot preparations. Even behind her reserved expression, Eashita unmistakably senses Penthia’s panic; it flickers in her tense eyes and rigid posture.
From a distance, Rowan and Penthia seemed to be getting along well during recent events, but the reality differed.
In truth, the current situation between them was completely the opposite.
Penthia is probably overthinking. She likely worries that Eashita might have feelings for Rowan, which is not true. Underneath Pen’s attempt to appear calm, her anxiety is obvious to Eashita, who knows Pen is struggling to present herself correctly to Rowan. Erika’s involvement intensifies Pen’s discomfort, making any hope of quietly avoiding notice feel impossible, just as it did for her ancestors at family gatherings. Eashita recognizes Pen’s reluctance as rooted in the fear of being judged by family—a fear that, though unfounded, still looms large.
Eashita has known about Rowan’s attraction to Penthia ever since Xander's proposal to her sister years ago—a past event that often resurfaces in her memory as she observes their current interactions.
She remembers being twenty-five, back then, when Rowan told her about the first time he had seen Penthia. He confessed this during a truth-or-dare game she hosted that night—a distinct moment from the present.
That year, during the family’s planned game night—prior to these present events—Erika had heard about Penthia's book launch. Half of the family missed Pen’s first reading due to Rowan’s visit, and Erika attended in Pen’s mother’s place. The siblings split into groups: Adela’s family, Cyrus, Xander, Vati, and Eashita joined Erika for the reading; Lady Iris, Franchesa, Gab, and Ella greeted Rowan. The groups swapped midway through the celebration, except for Erika, who remained with Pen. Later, the adults welcomed Rowan back from Milan with a party, while the kids congratulated Pen before a sleepover.
Back at that last game for the night—during those earlier days—Rowan was starry-eyed as he told his siblings about seeing seventeen-year-old Penthia. Eashita, Vati, and Delly swooned, while Cyrus and Xander joked about Rowan falling out of a tree after first seeing her.
To this day, Penthia does not know that her teenage self had already caught Rowan's heart before she ever learned about their forbidden love. This secret goes back to that earlier game night described above.
As for there being more to Eashita's friendship with Rowan, not possible.
Rowan was clear with Eashita about their friendship from the start. There was a line in their relationship that must not be crossed, or their friendship would end. Rowan learned to state this boundary after Eashita saw the London family reunion. At that event, she stopped his ex-girlfriend from going back to his hotel room. Despite Rowan’s relationship history, Eashita has never wanted him romantically. He feels more like an older brother to her than a potential partner.
Eashita finds Rowan's confessions charming. His delirious smile after confessing to the siblings amuses her, while Delly jokes that Rowan should turn his feelings into a one-hit wonder song.
During Eashita's visits back home in Texas—before the current events—she often saw Rowan staring out at Lindsey Hall’s backyard. If she asked about his visit there on November 28th, Rowan would enthusiastically retell how he first met Penthia.
Eashita and the Bazinson siblings hope Rowan will finally meet Pen this year. Eashita wants to watch their story unfold. Cyrus and Xander are tired of hearing drunk Rowan recite poems about Pen’s red curls. Rowan often ends game night with anxious poems about wanting to meet her.
Returning to the present, attention shifts back to Penthia and Rowan’s so-called 'unrequited love,' a story now at a complicated crossroads.
Earlier this evening, before the main events of tonight unfolded, Penthia and Rowan had already met. This happened when Eashita finished arranging her latest historical creations in Riverside County’s ballroom, just before the troublesome third wheel arrived.
While Eashita wasn’t happy to learn Erika was there when Penthia and Rowan met, she quickly found her mood brightened by Rowan’s polite actions.
Now that Rowan and Pen have met, Rowan makes sure she has a seat at meals. Eashita notices how Rowan stops himself from reaching for Pen’s hand when they are close. His eyes fill with awe when Pen speaks to his siblings.
It is a shame that Erika has made it difficult for the pair to spend time together.
Penthia's avoidance of Rowan around Eashita puts Powan’s future in doubt. Pen stays distant from Rowan because of Eashita’s friendship with him. Meanwhile, Eashita wishes Pen would take a chance on Rowan.
Eashita tries to leave the pair alone, but Pen keeps finding excuses to step out. Rowan often looks at Eashita with hurt, and she reminds him that Pen barely knows him yet. Rowan needs to be patient. Pen has trouble letting people into her life.
As the evening continues, Eashita plans to clarify her friendship with Rowan to Pen. She wants to make sure their misunderstanding does not harm Powan’s future. Eashita does not mention her hope to matchmake, because she wants Pen to make her own choice about Rowan. She also deeply values Rowan’s trust.
Eashita waits until the family stands up to clap for Penthia's performance. Taking the opportunity, she gently takes her best friend’s right hand with her left wrist.
Pen looks at her friend, surprised. Eashita says softly, "We need to talk," in Pen's ear. Pen blushes from singing in public. She nods, visibly upset, but agrees and returns the microphone.
Eashita sighs in relief. She still watches her friend and sees anger in Pen’s actions. Soon, Pen lets Eashita pull her away to a quiet place. The two run behind the screen and search for a secluded spot.
They find a quiet spot by the pool under the porch light.
Tension rises.
Eashita wonders how to start this hard conversation. Pen removes her hand from Eashita’s wrist.
Pen crosses her arms and glares as they walk to the high stools. Eashita waits for her to try to climb up. Pen, unable to reach the seat, asks, "Eashita, I am mad at you, but I need help with this stool."
Eashita doesn't tease her friend because, like Penthia, she is five-two and despises it when people make fun of her height.
She gives Pen her hand and helps boost her upset friend up onto the stool.
Their struggle with the stools creates tension.
Laughter breaks it as they joke about their heights and the talk ahead. Pen finally settles into the high chair as they take in the Riverside air when Eashta receives two ping messages.
One is from Bazinson's many family groups.
BF 5 with-in-laws: Dede, Xan, Wan, Delly, Olie, C, Ly, and Lady Is.
August XXXX
9.00 Pm.
Lady Is: Dear, is everything all right? We just saw Penthia, and you left in such a hurry.
Eashita texts a reassuring reply-
Nothing to worry about, Lady Is. Please stay in the karaoke area. Pen and I are safe. I need to clear things up an issue with Pen without interruption. Can someone distract Erika?
Rowan, Xan, and Lady Is reply with thumbs-ups before Eashita receives two more private messages.
Babysitter Emergency: Titi and Delly.
9.05 Pm
Delly: I got it. 🫡 Ka is distracted.
Vati: 🤫
The second message Eashita receives is from the man of the hour.
August XXXX
9.02 Pm.
Wan: the man. 🛬
Is everything okay, Ita? Please let me know if Pen is well.
Eashita smiles as she reads Rowan’s message and hears his concern. This guy is down for her! The shippier inside her, her shipper's mind, shrieks while trying not to fangirl over his sweet messages. Eashita masks her excitement with a neutral expression as she feels Pen’s glare.
She texts the group a thank-you and replies to Rowan.
9.06 pm
Ita: The Fairy 🦄
It is nothing serious.
Just a misunderstanding between Pen and me.
We needed to get away to talk in private. Brb.
Rowan texted another thumbs up, and Eashita put her phone on the bar's granite countertop.
"Well," Penthia states with aggravation, "Speak E-Ash-Ita!"
Eashita can hear the fury between each letter phase. She decides to fold by becoming vulnerable.
"You remember the summer I went to Linsdey Hall for the first time?" She asks.
Pen doesn't answer. Instead, her glare softens while she listens.
Eashita takes her silence as an okay to continue and confesses, "That one night, our families were meeting each other. I witnessed Xander propose to Lilavati, and I met Rowan after celebrating their bachelor/bachelorette party. He was charming, but neither of us was interested in being in a relationship. Since Rowan and I were both single, Vati made him my partner for their wedding. After our first meeting, Rowan and I became best friends because of our shared interests. Unrequited Love."
Eashita stops talking so Penthia can ask the questions she knows her best friend is dying to ask. Meanwhile, Penthia's posture rises as she becomes Eashita's focal point, trying to find a straightforward way to phrase her first question for the night.
"Do you-" Penthia pauses to give herself the courage to continue to ask in a vulnerable tone, "have feelings for Rowan?"
Eashita stares at Pen with sincerity and proclaims with certainty," No!” She pauses to collect her thoughts before justifying her answer, “Wan and I have not developed feelings for each other. And will not for we see each other as nothing but siblings by marriage."
Penthia relaxes as the tension drains from her shoulders. Eashita sees her processing years of missed information, waiting quietly for Pen's next question.
"Why wasn't I allowed to meet him during my childhood?" Penthia whispers, eyes shining with realization.
Eashita couldn't tell her the reason.
The only two people who can tell her are Erika and Rowan.
Erika would never confess her actions to Penthia, a selfish act Eashita can't bring herself to say aloud. As for Rowan, he would probably tell her, but would need Erika to confess first.
Eashita knows she cannot tell her the reason. But then she remembers how much Penthia loves to gossip.
'Perhaps. Penthia's past alter ego can speed up the confession.' She thought before smiling at Pen with a devious expression.
"I cannot answer your question. However, I know who can?" Eashita replies, "Someone who always found out secrets by standing behind walls."
Penthia could see the answer forming on Eashita's bow lips. She knows that, ah-ha, look behind her best friend's brown eyes.
Eashita has a plan.
A dangerous, but downright perfect.
"What is it?" Penthia cautiously asks.
Eashita places her hand above Pen's right hand before replying, "You are going to have to hide at the front of your room's door tomorrow before the pool party."
" Are you saying...Emerald Jane has to come out of retirement for me to know this answer?" Penthia asks, with a mischievous twinkle in her ocean-blue eyes.
Eashita nods yes, "And I will help you."
"But why can't you tell me?" Penthia asks in a childlike tone, and Eashita nods her head no.
"These people are the ones who can give you that answer," Eashita confesses.
"Okay, but you better let me know if the plan doesn't go to plan," Penthia replies after hearing her response.
Eashita gleefully claps in excitement at the thought of seeing Emerald Jane in action. She then helps Penthia come off the stool.
"Oof," Penthia shrieks out loud as the cushion on the stool slips off from its previous position before hearing the fabric rip.
Penthia faces palms herself as Eashita looks down at the now-torn-off cushion.
"How bad is the damage?" Penthia asks her friend.
Eashita chuckles at Pen's embarrassment before replying, "Not to worry, Pen. It is a simple hand stitch fix."
"Did you bring your emergency sewing kit?" Pen asks before sighing at the aftermath.
Eashita gives a wink in Pen's direction. "When do I ever leave the house without it?"
Pen lets a sigh of relief, "Thank goodness! I will stitch it up before going back."
Eashita pulls Pen beside her and hums nope as they slowly walk back to the party. "I am not leaving you out alone. Or else, I will have two of the many Bazinson siblings who will kill me if I leave you alone here."
Pen hums yes to Erika's protectiveness before asking, "I know Erika would. Who is the second?"
Eashita must have luck on her side tonight, for Erika rushed into their conversation by grabbing onto Penthia and removing her best friend from her side.
“There you are! I was looking for you!” Erika exclaimed while ignoring Eashita.
Pen gives Eashita a soft and sorry smile while Eashita gives her a good-luck thumbs-up expression before going back to the party alone.

🌻 13 Erika's second confession 🌻
Penthia's heart pounds in disbelief—she sang for Rowan on Friday. Pouring her feelings into music was as raw as a public confession, a trembling truth she never dreamed she'd utter with so many watching.
She discovers that her confidence emerges around the Bazinson clan. For years, their unwavering support has helped her feel accepted and safe, free to express herself as she truly is.
Perhaps it’s because she spent so many evenings with Erika’s family, growing closer each year, or maybe because they made her an honorary Bazinson by the age of fifteen.
Nevertheless, Penthia is thankful to God for giving her a singing voice.
Her voice may not be as distinct as Xander's, Erika's, or Rowan's, but Pen knows her first soprano could blend beautifully with Rowan's second tenor—especially if they performed a duet.
The idea of singing a duet with Rowan jolts Pen from her nerves to hope. As these daydreams blend with the villa's sounds, she shifts from anxious self-doubt to growing anticipation for what might come.
Maybe, with more confidence, Penthia could ask Rowan to sing at the next karaoke party or collaborate on his channel. Time will tell.
After last night, ideas rush to Penthia from her day at the villa. She hurries to her room and writes them down for 'I can see you.'
As dawn approaches and the household rests quietly, Penthia remains at her vanity, furiously writing. By morning, she dozes off, face down on a paper, untouched by anyone else.
Memories of last night bring a warm ache, but soon Pen's stomach twists with dread—the song Eashita chose for Karaoke night shadows her contentment.
Fictional by Khole Rose is hauntingly beautiful. Eashita’s glance at Xander—pained, lingering—before she turned teary-eyed to Pen, was almost unbearable.
Knowing that Eashita got hurt by Xander after meeting him at Adela's baby shower for her son, Auggie, is heartbreaking.
You try for someone, only to find they already have a partner—it shatters your self-esteem and leaves you wondering if the signs were always there.
The worst part? Xander accepted Eashita’s friend request, then, with no warning, ghosted her messages.
A few months later, Eashita found out that her eldest sister, Vati, was his girlfriend in his Valentine's Day post on Instagram. She then found another post for Vati's birthday, and the aftermath destroyed her.
The final blow: Two photos—Vati and Xander beaming, newly engaged. Eashita’s heart cracked, pain splintering inside her like shattered glass scattered on a marble floor.
Pen remembers Eashita silently shedding tears on one of their many Friday night sleepovers. Her ivory fingers brushed away the iron curls of the heartbroken woman's brown hair while Eashita and she cuddled in Pen's bed.
Eashita's jagged sobs still echo in Penthia’s mind. That memory scalds Pen afresh, drawing tears she cannot stop.
After that dreadful night of meeting Xander, Eashita changed.
After that night, the once-romantic writer changed careers—she became a YouTube sewist and found self-love, which unsettles Pen.
Whenever Penitha asks, Eashita, the cosplayer, shuts down. So Pen vows not to bring up the past until her friend is ready.
After years of yearning, Eashita finally accepted her new reality—she became Xander's sister by marriage.
Pen still doesn't know how Eashita can be with Xander and Vati—until last night, when Eashita confirms her platonic friendship with Rowan.
It’s strange for Penthia to see Eashita bond with Rowan. Her friend appreciates their sibling-like friendship. Pen hopes the right man won’t mistake Easthia’s friendship for romance and accepts Rowan. No insecurities—only love.
Pen still feels guilty for introducing Vati to Xand and wants to claim someone she just met. She knows Vati suits Erika’s brother more than Eashita. Pen also hopes to learn about Rowan at the villa, as Eashita has.
Today, a swell of guilt and resolve pushes Penthia to make amends to Eashita. Determined, she wears something she’d never dare choose, ready to take a vulnerable step forward.
Pen frowns at her reflection, uncomfortable. Her hair falls in a side fishtail braid, sunglasses pushing back her curls. The blush-pink swimsuit flatters her pudgy stomach and shows off her ivory curves. Its V-neck highlights her best assets.
The outfit looks phenomenal, but Pen can't see her beauty.
Penthia was about to fix another part of her outfit, only to stop herself when she received a text message from Eashita.
Later that afternoon, in August, XXXX:
12.00 pm
Ash.
The plan is a go, Emerald. It is time, girly. A green heart emoji next to her text.
Doubting her choice of bathing suit, Pen quickly wraps herself in a shawl, bracing for the truth.
Penthia must know who was stopping her from meeting Rowan. She also wants to see Eashita smile. Seeing her best friend's brown eyes sparkle with excitement always puts a smile on Pen's face.
This is how Penthia boosts her confidence and shows love for her friends.
"Well, this outfit is as good as it gets," Pen whispers, grabbing her beach bag and walking out.
Shortly after, as Pen prepares herself and steps out, she slowly opens the door to hear Eashita and Erika bickering in the narrow hallway outside her guest bedroom.
"I saw the pain, Pen, last night after singing that song." Erika angrily whispers, "Are you trying to hurt her for introducing my brother to your sister?"
"Why on earth would you think that?" Eashita says back, "Plus, what is your deal?"
"My deal. I have no idea what you are talking about." Erika declares in confusion.
"Really," Eashita stated through her teeth. "Erika, you know dam well what I am talking about."
"No, I don't." Erika barks in a whisper.
Eashita scoffs. "Aren't you the one who told all your siblings not to let Rowan meet Penthia!"
Pen's jaw drops from Eashita's statement, but she stays still as she takes in the rest of their conversation.
"Erika, everyone knows you love Pen, and not in a friendship way." Eashita calmly states. "Face the facts, Erika! Penthia Athy doesn't feel the same!"
Erika was about to defend herself when Eashita added more accusations, "You should allow Penthia space to know the rest of your siblings. That includes Wan!"
Erika stomps her right foot in anger, "She is my best friend. I will not-"
Eashita cuts into her rant, "If you are her best friend, then you should give her this opportunity to know Rowan! They deserve to know each other."
Erika is about to cut in on her request when Eashita sternly states in fury, "Pen has been with you since you two attended the same high school." She pauses to warn the lady in front of her, "Do not be stupid, Erika. Stop hovering over Pen like she is some dam prize!"
"I do not!" Erika shouts in an offensive tone, and Eashita lowers her voice, "Or do you want to be like Megan from Stolen Baby?"
Pen's blue eyes dart back and forth as she recalls that scary Lifetime movie.
The friendship between the two main characters hits way too close to home for Pen.
After watching it, she called Erika. Balling her eyes in fear while confessing to El that she hopes their friendship doesn't end with one of them dead at the other's hands.
At first, Erika had no idea what Pen was talking about until she found the movie Stolen Baby, in which Emily Osment portrayed Megan, and watched it with one of her brothers.
Stolen Baby is based on a real-life event, and the movie traumatized both women.
This truthful story lessened Erika's strong need for Penthia's constant attention. After seeing the dangers of an unhealthy attachment, Erika allowed them both time apart to learn about themselves.
Erika sighs, "Fine! I promise to spend less time with Penthia while we are here."
"And!" Eashita firmly states without bringing up Erika's other problem, her brother.
In defeat, Erika states. "I will not interfere with Penthia and Rowan's friendship."
Eashita hums sure before asking, "Why did you allow me to meet Rowan and not Pen?"
Instead of answering her question, Erika confesses to Eashita in a bitter tone, "All my life, I had friends who pretended to be my friend."
Erika pauses, and Pen knows that she is trying not to cry.
"They came for my birthday," Erika stutters, voice splintered. "By the end... Rowan would charm them away while I just—watched, forgotten—listening to my family’s sing happy birthday while the girls I had invited began to drift up the stairs."
Tears fall down Pen's eyes from hearing her best friend's confession while trying to keep quiet.
"I wish I could give you a pass for your actions." Eashita states in a kind tone before going into her stern tone once more, "Erika, you need to back off. Allow Pen to spend this weekend with your brother, and stop watching her every move. Or you will lose your friendship with her. Forever!"
"Very well." Erika breathes out in remorse. “If you believe Pen would be happy.”
“Eashita hastily replies, “It will do her good to meet the brother.”
Erika sighs in resignation, "Then I will step aside.”
Pen sighs in relief from Erika's response before waiting for them to leave.
The two stop talking and begin making their way across the long hallway.
Pen listens carefully for footsteps receding toward the pool entrance.
Once the hallway falls quiet, she finally dares to emerge from her room into the now-empty corridor, scanning for any sign of the others. From a few feet away, Easthia and Erika are making their way towards the back porch entrance.
Sighing in relief, Pen keeps her eyes on the now-empty hallway, her attention lingering on where Erika and Eashita stood. She steps carefully toward the second hall entrance, only to collide with Rowan Bazison as she turns the corner.
"Oof." They state at the same time, while Rowan puts his arms around Penthia's waist to gain his balance.
Rowan chuckles at the shock Penthia in his arms while she lets out a gasp from feeling his hands on her body for the first time.
Rather than saying anything, Rowan and Penthia allow themselves more time to enjoy each other's embrace while taking in the other's appearance.
Rowan can’t help but think, ‘Wow, she looks beautiful, ' while Penthia keeps going over Erika’s second confession, ‘Does Erika know about Eashita’s feelings for Xander?’
Little did the pair know that someone was observing their moment of silence. Eashita quietly walked into the hallway, a mischievous smile on her face, and took a picture of the pair before rejoining the family in the pool area.
“They will thank me for this later,” Eashita whispers as she saves the photo to her gallery.
🌻 14 The Secret Garden🌻
Rowan's strong arms made Penthia feel safe. She didn't know why or how it was possible. But as she nestled closer, the subtle scent of ocean breeze from his demi-blue jacket, mixed with a hint of crisp autumn air, enveloped her senses, and the rhythmic sound of his steady breathing calmed her heart. It was as though these tiny details anchored her to a place where she could finally let her guard down.
Still, her heart trusted that he was there, even though they had only met this Friday.
The traveler doesn’t have to speak. Penthia feels the empathy radiating from his gaze, a silent communication that is more eloquent than words. His eyes soften, and as a tear threatens to escape from her eye, Rowan gently raises a hand and brushes it away with his thumb. This simple gesture, full of unspoken understanding, reassures Penthia during her most vulnerable moment.
Behind his navy blue eyes, concern radiates the words, 'I am here. Let me in.' Yet he is holding her upper body with the lightest touch possible. Rowan’s gaze lingers on Penthia, his brow furrowing as he notices her trembling. The depth of his worry is clear in his expression, giving Penthia permission to release her pain. She weeps into his chest. Tears stream down her cheeks. She struggles—Erika's confession swirls in her mind. Her heart throbs. She is uncertain how to bear the pain.
With just one look, Penthia knows Rowan isn’t going to leave her.
"You heard them?" Rowan asks softly, brushing his fingers through her red curls.
Penthia can only nod yes before another sob escapes her.
Rowan exhales, worry creasing his brow as he sees her pain. He pauses, then quietly apologizes, placing a comforting hand on her back. His voice is soft and sorrowful.
"I am sorry you had to find out like this, Pen. But hopefully, I can give you the answers you don't have about our childhood from my point of view."
Pen—a nickname Penthia always had with the Bazison family. But when Rowan said it, to her it was like hearing a sweet melody. She hoped to hear that melody again—if Rowan would let her into his life.
"O-okay!" Pen stammers, her voice trembling as she fights more tears, betrayal, and sadness, clear on her face.
Rowan gently lets go of her, then offers his left hand, palm up, inviting her to take it. "Do you trust me?" he asks, his voice soft.
Pen chuckles, "Okay, Aladdin."
Rowan smiles, playing along and doing his best Aladdin impression: "Well then! Do you trust me, princess?"
Penthia hesitates, glancing at Rowan to read his micro-expression. Then, responding to their playful exchange, she extends her left hand to accept his, a slight smile breaking through her tears.
"Yes, though I am not a princess," Pen says, her smile bright with genuine delight.
"Maybe I should call you darling, since you’re so daring with your witty remarks!" Rowan teases, grinning at her.
Penthia starts to speak, but Rowan quietly places his hand on her shoulder, guiding her away from the door and into the dim hallway. As they walk, a soft creak echoes beneath their steps, a sound that briefly interrupts the silence and anchors them in the moment. Rowan glances at her, his soft chuckle reflecting relief at her sudden quietness as he leads them along the narrow villa halls.
Penthia stays quiet, studying her pale, chubby fingers as Rowan's warm, thin hand covers hers, holding it gently. The echo of their footsteps and the occasional flicker from a sconce are the only signs of life in the narrow hallway. Rowan glances between the path ahead and Penthia's teary face, offering her a reassuring smile as they reach the end.
Penthia quickly wipes her tears and, channeling Disney Princess Jasmine, decides to trust Rowan fully.
Together, they approach the emergency exit. Rowan pushes on the door, but it doesn’t budge at first. He resets his grip and tries again, applying more upper-body strength.
Beyond the door lies a breathtaking garden that instantly transports Penthia back to her childhood dreams. The wildflowers seem to lean toward one another, whispering secrets like schoolmates on a playground. She feels an immediate surge of nostalgia, recalling not just her childhood getaway from her favorite book but also her own longing for deeper connections she craved growing up. The vibrant colors of the flowers blur into the hazy memories of her youth, pulling at her heartstrings as she steps further into the scene, capturing the essence of companionship she always yearned for.
Pen quickly notices more archways leading to other gardens, as well as another gate that lets people leave the Riverside Villa grounds. The tidy garden walls are full of ivory vines and roses of every natural color, crawling all the brick walls of the first garden room. Two horse statues stand on their hind legs against the back wall. Their copper had turned green from years of exposure to the weather.
Pen takes in the placement of the two horses, which she didn’t realize was the centerpiece of the right corner of the twenty-by-five front walls, and the many lush leaves from a nearby ivy bush.
The garden's center is a three-tiered fountain. A lotus top, carved from gray stone, sits above. Flowers of all kinds surround the fountain. The stone pathway circles the first row of flowers.
"Wow," Pen gasps. Rowan, noticing, says proudly, "This is the perfect place to talk privately."
Rowan’s heart begins to accelerate as he finds ease in the first moment alone with Pen, without any siblings to interrupt them. Then Pen surprises them both by saying, "This reminds me of my childhood favorite book." Penthia’s eyes dart excitedly around the garden, her face bright and full of awe as she takes in the sights. Rowan stands beside her, watching her reaction and quietly giving her space to marvel at the scenery.
"What book was it?" Rowan curiously asks, a glimmer of joy in his eyes.
"The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett," Pen casually states as she moves towards the center of the room.
Rowan follows behind her with a knowing smile, saying, "Really! Many people would find that book boring."
Pen chuckles. "Well, those people didn't pay attention to how the author described the garden! Frances words painted such a clear picture. I remember during school hours, at lunchtime. The scent of wood surrounded me, and the sunlight flickered across the yellow pages, casting shadows against the pavement. I was entranced, flipping pages rapidly, and suddenly I was no longer just reading. I was standing next to Mary Lennox, hidden amidst the ivy. The imagery was so vivid, a world away from my rough childhood. That single book allowed me to escape and help Mary bring the garden back to life."
Pen stops by the white stone fountain and looks into the water, noticing moss at the bottom of the main seashell.
"I’m guessing you related a lot to Mary Lennox as a child?" Rowan states in a matter-of-fact tone.
Pen continues to gaze at the ripples created by the water droplets from the second tier of the fountain as she admits, "Yes, but my favorite character is Dickon's sister, Martha.” She pauses in amusement,” Her big mouth, snarkiness, honesty, and friendship with Mary were something I had always wanted growing up. My favorite scenes from the book are when Martha opens her big mouth to tell Mary something she wasn't supposed to tell her."
Rowan chuckles at hearing Penthia's confession before teasing her in a child-like manner. "That might explain why you and Erika had become friends so easily in high school!"
Pen hums in assent as she glances right, seeing Rowan seated on the nearest bench before the fountain.
As she sits next to Rowan, Pen clarifies, "Erika reminds me so much of Martha Sowerby." She busies her nervous hands by smoothing the fabric of her cover-up, glancing over at Rowan as she speaks.
Rowan smiles at Pen’s memory as he waits for her to start the topic of why they were there in the first place. Erika Elanie.
"I do feel betrayed by Erika's actions. To know that she didn't allow me to get to know you— Rowan, that is unforgivable." Pen begins, "Yet a part of me can't be upset because I did the same to her in high school."
Rowan listens quietly, his eyes focused on her beauty as Pen goes on, careful not to interrupt her as she opens up.
"Erika didn't know about the gossip blog I created in high school. She found out about me being behind the name Emerald Jane from my bully." Pen pauses to collect her thoughts and admits, "That secret almost destroyed our friendship. It would have been destroyed beyond repair if Rus and Delly hadn't stepped in and had us closed off in one of the closets in Lindsey Hall."
"Pen. I must say sorry to you." Rowan states with remorse, "On behalf of Erika and our family."
Pen steps in, "None of you did anything wrong."
Rowan cuts in, "No, Pen. We all agreed to this decision as a family."
"What do you mean?" Pen asks with confusion.
Rowan adjusts his position on the bench before beginning his explanation.
“Erika was Daddy's little girl. He loved all of us dearly. But he always showed a bit more love to Erika because she reminded him so much of our mother when she was known as Iris Edgar. I remember him often whispering to her forehead, 'My little firecracker, you've got your mother's spirit.' Those words were always accompanied by a gentle touch on Erika's head, then he looked at me and asked me to promise him, 'You take care of my firecracker. Don’t ever let her light wilt, and always protect her. Family is the second most important group of people in your life."
Rowan's eyes were soft with nostalgia. As he retells the final memory of Aster, the scent of his father's cologne, a mix of cedar and sea salt, lingered in the air, a comforting reminder of his presence. It felt like a promise bound not just by words, but by the very essence that was distinctly Lord Asher Bazinson.”
Pen keeps her eyes focused on Rowan as he talks, watching his expression closely as he makes his confession. Wanting to know more about the man whom Rowan resembled.
"It is true. Erika had to share many of her birthdays with me growing up. I didn't know she felt alone by her so-called friends because of me til today. My father talked to Mom about Erika's discomfort with the aftermath of her thirteenth birthday party, and they had decided to have us celebrate our birthdays separately. To make it easy for Ka, Mom asked me to stay out of our home whenever Erika had her friends over. And, of course, since I love my family, I did what was best for Erika."
Rowan takes a break in and out before declaring with pain behind his words. "By then, our father had died. The news of his death not only destroyed our mother and my siblings. But Erika was hit the hardest by grief. In a way, I think that is why she is holding on to her friendship with you so tightly."
Pen nodded. "How did he die?" she asked carefully. "Erika wouldn’t tell me the whole story when I asked."
Rowan's Adam's Apple rises and falls in distress. He begins to tell Pen the story from his memories, "While going to the bank to get money to buy our mother a bouquet of lavender and hyacinths, my father was killed. His body was inside the bank's largest vault. Delly and I couldn't hear how he was found due to them mumbling under their breath when discussing it with Xander and my mother."
He pauses, taking a deep breath before continuing. "The police report states that my father was trying to save an old lady who wouldn't give her purse to a couple of robbers. She was saved by my father taking the bullet on her behalf." Rowan's voice turns grave.
Rowan takes a moment to collect his thoughts, allowing the weight of his words to settle before moving on. "Then we heard that Franny lost her parents a few months prior due to the driver's drinking, and bizarrely, the bi- driver dashed away before the cops found their car over a ditch. As luck would have it, our parents were able to gain the paperwork to adopt Franny before our father’s death. Franny was six when we were introduced to her later on that same night."
Rowan continues, "With Cy away at college, Xander became in charge of the household. He introduced Franny to us. I believe Erika was seven, Delly was ten, I was eleven, but Ella and Gab were only a year old when it happened."
A slight smile crosses Rowan's face as he adds, "My dear little cousin saved us by bringing us hope through her music. Hearing Franny play the piano every morning reminded us of him and how fortunate we are to have each other. To this day, we wake up each morning with a smile as she plays a new classic piece that our mother had gifted her."
Pen gives a bittersweet smile, she confesses in a wavery voice. "Erika and I bonded most over losing our athairs. That pain of having a shared experience has allowed us to create a strong friendship where we were able to rely on each other for comfort."
Rowan looks in her direction in surprise. He never knew that Pen's father passed or the difficult childhood he had, and he wanted to know more. That is-- if she would let him.
Pen turns away and looks at the fountain, her voice soft. "Even though my athair died because of his gambling, he was always a thoughtful father. My favorite memories with athair were when he brought me sunflowers for my birthday. I was close to him, unlike my sisters. I miss athair a lot, and when I see the color yellow, it reminds me of him. As I have grown accustomed to his birthday presents, yellow has become my favorite color."
Rowan teases,” Does that mean you will be wearing yellow again?”
A light breeze rustles through the garden, lifting Pen's hair and brushing it across her cheek.
Pen notices a nearby patch of English primrose swaying in the shade, its colorful petals flecked with hints of yellow, reflecting the sunlight. The bright color softly brings back memories of her childhood, of sunflowers and the light her father brought into her life, before thinking back to Rowan’s question.
"How do you know I wore that color?" Pen asks, smiling curiously.
Rowan admits with a goofy grin, "Although Erika made it impossible to be your friend. I remember seeing you spend the summer at our home, and seeing you wearing these historic yellow dresses from the early 1800s."
Pen makes a foul face at his comment. "My mother made me wear that awful shade of color. If it were up to me, I would have worn a golden yellow, but she insisted I wear that color. My Athair had my mother compromise, and we had a deal that I could pick the style of the dresses."
Rowan leans closer to Pen to ask, "So will you?"
Pen looks back at him, confused by his question, then her gaze drifts toward his lips, momentarily distracted by the closeness between them.
"Penthia." He whispers. Rowan savors saying her full name while he waits for her. Pen hums yes before hearing he asks again, "Will you be wearing the color yellow again?"
Rowan leans back to see her face. Pen suddenly remembers who she was with, looks away in embarrassment, and stammers, "H-E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS, NO!" with clear disgust.
Rowan starts to laugh at her innocent outburst, but as his laughter fades, a look of admiration crosses his face. In that moment, he sees the genuineness behind her playful indignation, and it tugs at something deeper within him. Rowan quickly covers his moment of vulnerability by responding swiftly.
"I wasn’t expecting that answer!" He chuckles again before teasing her. "Penthia, you don’t have to shout. I can hear you just fine."
Pen's nervous behavior seems cute to Rowan, and his quick responses let her know he's interested in her. Sadly, this author didn't. In fact, the whole interaction made it seem like he saw her as his little sister's friend.
Penthia almost takes offense at Rowan's comment, but instead she gets up and begins walking away.
"What!" Rowan started to flirt. "You have nothing more to share with me? Or should I expect another Instagram poem from you, tonight?"
Penthia turns to glare at him, and Rowan sees her watching his surprised expression with wide blue eyes. "You actually read them!"
Rowan nods ‘yes’, and Penthia groans, covering her face with both hands. "Just so you know, I was drunk when I sent that to you by accident," she clarifies, turning back to him.
"Well, I think it’s endearing, just like your sudden outbursts when you can’t say the word, hell," Rowan remarks with a smirk.
Right then, Rowan wonders if he’d gone too far, because Penthia stops in her tracks.
Penthia spins around and replies in disbelief, "I do not believe you!"
Rowan wanted to laugh at her response, but held it in when he saw she was serious. Instead of replying, Rowan takes a moment to appreciate how easy it was to talk and flirt with Penthia, even though she doesn’t believe them.
Rowan, at the age of thirty-three, will love all Penthia’s future quirks and find everything she does endearing. In the quiet moments when he reflects on their journey, he realizes that every little quirk and endearing trait has only endeared her to him more.
As for Penthia, she will allow her past bullies to affect her self-esteem until that day when Rowan breaks her heart on Instagram Live.
Being the target of the most popular football player, who had a target on her back after her previous friend ratted him, which resulted in his temporary suspension from the football team for a month, wouldn’t have prepared Penthia for her loss in the friends-to-lovers trope.
Thinking of a way to break Penthia out of her negative, Rowan playfully shouts, "I guess I am going to have to chase you in order to get an answer!"
Seeing Rowan’s carefree smile as he starts to run, Penthia grins and runs away from him, laughing at his boyish antics as if nothing had happened a few seconds ago.
“No!” Penthia playfully shouts, between her fits of laughter.
Rowan soon finds her laughter contagious and joins in.
Their laughter echoes across the gardens until a pack of doves takes flight from the unexpected noise, and the pair duck down to protect their heads from being pooped on.
